We’re excited to be in Malawi for the Africa Disability Conference (ADC)!

‎Today marked the start of the conference with a learning visit showcasing the inspiring work being done in early intervention through a collaboration between our hosts, Fount for Nations, and the Government of Malawi.
‎
‎It was encouraging to see how strong partnerships can expand opportunities for children with disabilities and their families. Seeing these approaches in action reminds us of the power of collaboration, shared learning, and investing in children early.
‎
‎We were also honoured to meet Hon. Khadija Leah Chunga MP and discuss disability inclusion and the importance of working together to improve opportunities for children and families across the region.
‎
‎We’re looking forward to the days ahead as we connect with colleagues from across Africa, exchange ideas, and bring new knowledge and inspiration back to Uganda.

This is proof that learning doesn’t stop at any age! 🎓 Congratulations to the latest graduates of our Street Business School programme, celebrated recently at our Kasese office.

These caregivers, who are majority female, have spent the past six months developing business and entrepreneurial skills, building the confidence and knowledge needed to create sustainable livelihoods for themselves and their families.

At KCDC, we know that supporting children with disabilities means supporting their families too. Many of the families we work with are female-headed households facing significant financial pressures, often alongside the additional costs of caring for a child with a disability.

Through our partnership with Street Business School, we empower female caregivers with practical training in business development, savings, bookkeeping, market analysis and investment, helping them start and grow businesses with as little as $2–3 of starting capital.

Since 2017, 393 caregivers have graduated from the programme, with 90% still running their businesses one year later. On average, participants increase their income by an incredible 1,095% within a year of completing the course.

But the impact goes far beyond income. Graduates report increased confidence and self-esteem, greater financial independence, improved access to education and healthcare for their children, and stronger connections within their communities.

When we invest in women, they invest in their families. When families thrive, children thrive.

There’s nothing more important than a healthy meal. At KCDC, we know that children with disabilities are disproportionately affected by malnutrition. Around 15% of children with disabilities registered with KCDC are severely malnourished, facing risks including poor weight gain, delayed development, muscle weakness, lethargy, and increased vulnerability to illness. In severe cases, malnutrition can be life-threatening.

In Uganda’s Toro sub-region, where Kasese is located, malnutrition rates are among the highest in the country, with stunting affecting over 40% of children, well above the national average. For families, access to consistent, nutritious food is often a daily struggle, made worse by poverty, disability, and food insecurity.

At KCDC, our nutrition programme is built around community-based care and education. Many feeding challenges, such as difficulties with swallowing, positioning, or muscle control, can be significantly improved through targeted support from our speech and language therapists, alongside caregiver training.

We also provide emergency therapeutic foods to help reverse severe acute malnutrition, alongside long-term support through nutrition education and sustainable gardening programmes, empowering families to grow and prepare nutritious food at home.

What a simple, joyful activity showing how play can open up learning for every child. All you need is a plastic glove, some water, and your best drawing skills to bring a cow to life. This hands-on ‘milking’ activity helps children explore early concepts like cause and effect, sensory learning, fine motor skills, and imagination, all through play.
