EmbraceKulture Embrace ability, believe in potential of all children
She is not eating. In her village they call her "kateyemba," meaning the unable one.

In a small school in the heart of Entebbe Oliva sits on the veranda with a plate of posho on her lap. She is looking at the cooks house, dreaming of the day she will own her own restaurant. Her dream is simple but it will be near impossible to accomplish because Oliva has a disability called Down Syndrome and in Uganda her disability leaves her excluded. People believe she is helpless. Her mother,

afraid of the negative stigma she may face, sent Oliva out to live on the streets or in foster homes. She is abused and taken advantage of. Oliva is not alone. There are 2.7 million children with disabilities in Uganda. 96% of these children do not receive basic education because they are seen as unable to learn. Without skills they rely on their community, that has already rejected them. They are five times more likely to be victims of abuse. embraceKulture is working to change this! We are focused on unlocking the potential of all children and showcasing their unique ability. And you can help. We all have a unique ability that we can use to make the world a better place. A long but important post!!

Dear Friends,

Together, we have built something extraordinary—a movement that has transformed the lives of children and youth with disabilities in Uganda and forever changed how their communities see, support, and celebrate them.

When Embrace Kulture was founded, our vision was to ignite inclusion—to help local leaders and families build systems that would last long after us. Thanks to your generosity and unwavering belief, that vision has been realized. There are now strong Ugandan-led organizations continuing this work, government policies that protect children with disabilities, and communities that champion inclusion as a right, not a favor.

Because of this remarkable progress, the Board has made the thoughtful and heartfelt decision to make our 10-year anniversary celebration our final event and to conclude all fundraising efforts at the end of 2025. It was not an easy decision, but it is one rooted in success and faith in the movement we helped build.

Over the past decade, Embrace Kulture has worked hand-in-hand with families, schools, and communities to advance the rights and inclusion of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Together, we have achieved the very goals we set out to accomplish: building a strong disability movement, supporting the creation of laws and policies that protect children, and shifting public perception from stigma to recognition and pride. What began as a small initiative has grown into a powerful, self-sustaining movement led by Ugandans themselves.

As we look ahead, we believe the most impactful next step is to fully transition to local leadership and support. Continuing to fundraise and operate from abroad could unintentionally allow the government to step back from its responsibilities instead of deepening its commitment. By ending our fundraising efforts, we affirm our belief that Uganda is ready for this next phase—and we honor the principle that true inclusion and sustainability come from within the community itself.

Embrace Kulture will continue to operate into 2026 to ensure that all funds remaining in our bank account go directly to Uganda. This funding will support the transition to local leadership and enable continued development of the disability movement. We will discontinue our donation platform as of December 31, 2025. If you are enrolled in automatic donation, these donations will not continue beyond this date.

Our final gathering in Massachusetts will be a joyful reflection of all that we’ve achieved together. Guests will walk through a series of interactive exhibits that tell the story of our journey—from the early days of awareness campaigns to national advocacy milestones. We’ll also be joined by Stephen Kabenge, who has been instrumental in the work of Embrace Kulture in Uganda. It will be a night filled with gratitude, music, dancing, and celebration. Please join us at this in-person celebration at 6PM on December 3 in Massachusetts. Tickets can be purchased online at www.embracekulture.org/event

While we know distance may keep many of you from joining us in person, please know that this milestone belongs to you, too. Every step of this journey—from the first students we worked with to the voices raised at the United Nations—has been powered by your generosity, compassion, and belief in inclusion. We are profoundly grateful for the community that stood beside us and made this movement possible.

With heartfelt appreciation,
Christa Preston and the Embrace Kulture Board of Directors

AMBASSADORS OF THE MONTH…

Our ambassador program thrives on 4 pillars; Awareness, Identification, Referral & Linkages.
Our Ambassadors are trained to educate their communities about different disabilities to foster
for inclusion-Awareness, Identify children & young adults with intellectual disabilities using
screening tools, Link parents to us or credible support systems and most Importantly refer their
friends to join the movement of Leaving no more hidden children.

Here’s ‘s latest story;
‘’While on a field trip in Kween district in a remote Village, I randomly met a little cute boy Joshua
whom I felt good about. He has an intellectual disability Yet to be diagnosed). His parents had no idea what had befallen their son (During birth they believed it was witchcraft). Until I explained to them that it was all just a myth! I made a sweet friend in Joshua. I promised Joshua’s Parent’s that I
would Link him to Embrace Kulture for a better diagnosis.

We are heartily saddened by the passing of our cherished & hard working disability advocate COUNCILLOR MODESTA TEZIKYABBILI. For years in Entebbe, she has defied odds to stand with every person with a disability, their family and pushing to better the lives of the underprivileged that knocked on her door!

She has been a vocal power house in advocating for the rights of persons with disability in Entebbe, a stance that she later conjoined with active leadership as a channel to air grievances straight to the responsible stakeholders. She was serving as the Speaker for the Entebbe Division Council at the time of her demise.

Not only was she vocal at advocacy but one whom many parents of children with intellectual disabilities knew as a woman of actions. She always had solutions.

We always Joked with her at how despite being under-resourced, we can always do as much as a community even by merely changing perceptions people have on disabilities.
We shall deeply miss your positive energy, your consistent dedication to stir change.

Your legacy will surely live on through the lives of the children and young adults that you have changed and given a purpose.

Rest in Power, Councillor MODESTA

The 2nd school term of the academic year is open. The pupils and teachers at BEE SMART CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER & VOCATIONAL SCHOOL returned in high gear!

They were looking forward to engaging in the most informative yet exciting activity of their chapter i.e SIGN LANGUAGE LESSONS.

With some of their fellow learners living with autsim and down syndrome at the same school, it was incumbent on us to equip the teachers with sign language skills to enhance the impact of their teaching environment while the learners would learn and appreciate different ways of communication with their peers who are non verbal and differentky abled.

We are excited to see this journey that started last term move half way in addressing 50% of the communication gaps/challanges.

AMBASSADOR OF THE MONTH
…..part 2…….

…it is only through linking parents with children with disability that they can easily be mobilized for such events easily as the database already will have them. Also listening to parents speak with a lot of love, encouragement and gratitude to their children and Rowans down syndrome awareness center Hoima for their great support. This encouraged me to continue increasing awareness in my community to stop hidden children with disability. Among what I learnt from the doctor on that day is that a lot of challenges are faced by these children e.g insomnia, heart issues, therefore need some Education on this. However, if services like physiotherapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, e.t.c, are embraced then this would help in the development of these children. Hence the call for improved support systems. Some of the challenges were heavy rains during our travel that made visibility a challenge but we managed to pull through and slight language barrier, which I overcame by constantly asking my colleagues to interpret for me. All in alĺ, it was a successful event for me I learnt a lot, I was able to network with different partners, parents and children on that day. Parents of the children with disability are a very vital component in ensuring that these support systems remain valid even when they have been improved.

AMBASSADOR OF THE MONTH
….Part 1…..

NAME: VIVIAN NZABANITA
CHAPTER: MANYAGO COMMUNITY

Embrace Kulture provided me with an opportunity to attend with their team THE world Down syndrome day in Buliisa in March. It was such a great day but before that my experience as we traveled was awesome as I observed one of the children we traveled with. He was very active and jolly throughout the journey, at the event and back. This made me wonder if all children with this disability accessed care and support how productive they would be. We began with marching to the venue, and here I supported some children by guiding them on the road for their safety. We raised banners for awareness and here I noticed some of the people in the community took photos of the banners to educate themselves more. During the event I was able to interact with about 3 -4children and I noticed that they were so confident and new exactly what they wanted. To me I praise the already existing support systems in place to include them and once improved it would even be better. Seeing the turn up on that day of parents being present with their children with exhibiting lot of pride was a good feeling and challenged me to continue the spirit of identifying hidden children with disability because some families & communities discriminate it out of ignorance…….
