The most powerful lessons don't come from slides. They come from the room itself.

It was an honor to speak as a keynote speaker at the 2026 Rotary District 9350 Conference and Assembly in Cape Town, on The Art of Conflict Resolution.

Instead of leading with theory, I let the room teach itself.

Exercise one: I walked in and was deliberately dismissive toward one delegate in front of everyone. When she stepped out, no one had objected.

So I asked the room: why the silence? Was it because the injustice wasn't happening to you? Or because I held the authority the speaker, the teacher so it felt like it "wasn't your place" to speak up?

Then I asked: do you have club bylaws? Family rules? They said yes. I asked why. Their answer: to govern us, to hold even those with power accountable not to excuse bad behavior because of who holds it.

When the delegate returned, she said she'd felt disrespected. Rude. Abused. I told the room: that's the reality for people who experience this and stay silent because it wasn't happening to them. If my treatment of one person felt unfair to witness, imagine living it. Creating safety and belonging for others isn't optional it's our responsibility.

Exercise two: Three delegates. One left the room. When she returned, the other two stopped their conversation cold then resumed once she left again. The second time, they kept talking and briefed her on what she'd missed.

Her words: the first time, she felt like she didn't belong. The second time, she felt included, seen, valued.

That's the lesson we cannot claim to plan for young people without young people at the table. We cannot call it a family meeting if a family member is left out. Exclusion isn't a side effect. It's a choice.

Conflict resolution isn't about avoiding discomfort it's about facing it. Breaking down the barriers that keep people out, and building space wide enough for every voice, every personality, every lived experience.

Deep gratitude to Rotary-Rotaract District 9350 and its members for the invitation to speak. And to Rotary International and member everywhere thank you for the work you do empowering young people and building safer, more peaceful communities
