Imagine being told you can’t attend school because of your health condition.
Imagine watching other children learn, while you stay home not for lack of effort, but because of stigma and misunderstanding.
Imagine a bright 10-year-old with dreams of becoming a doctor. But every term, her books remain unopened not because she doesn’t want to learn, but because her parents are not paying fees and school requirements and school has refused to provide enough support,
Instead of compassion, she faces stigma, isolation, and rejection. Teachers whisper that she’s “too weak.” Classmates avoid her during group work. When she’s admitted to the hospital for pain crises, no one checks in ; only missed lessons and lost hope.
This is the hidden classroom reality for many children with SCD. 💔
For many children living with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD), this is reality. They miss school due to frequent hospital visits, yet when they return, they face rejection teachers who think they’re “too fragile,” classmates who keep their distance, and schools that refuse to provide support or even basic materials.
In many communities, children living with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) are silently pushed out of school.
They miss classes because of frequent hospital admissions and when they return, they’re met with stigma and rejection instead of support.
Meanwhile, parents already burdened by hospital bills and sleepless nights are left heartbroken. They want the best for their children, but can’t afford both treatment and school fees. They face judgment instead of understanding: Some begin to blame the child, Some hide them indoors to “avoid embarrassment.” Some stop paying school fees, believing the child “won’t survive long.”
Others show love mixed with frustration, torn between exhaustion and hope.
💭 Imagine what that does to a young mind: the feeling of being unwanted for something you never chose.
Sickle Cell Disease is not contagious. These children are bright, determined, and deserving of a chance. What they and their parents need is compassion, awareness, and inclusion.
Together let's spread SCS awareness
