Israel has confirmed the authenticity of a viral photo showing a Palestinian detainee being tortured by soldiers.

The military said it had identified the incident and that an inquiry was underway. It added that “those involved will be dealt with in accordance with the findings.” A spokesperson did not disclose the man’s name or the location of his detention.

The Instagram post, uploaded by a user whose account appears to have been deleted, included the Hebrew words “good morning” over the image. The picture went viral after it was shared on June 30 by Palestinian writer and activist Tamer.

Several NGOs told The Guardian and The New York Times that the picture constitutes evidence of war crimes and is consistent with testimonies from former Palestinian detainees who have reported systematic torture inside Israeli prisons.

Court Grants Bail to Muwanga Kivumbi
