Menstrual Health Management (MHM) remains a serious but often silent challenge in many rural schools. For many girls, a natural biological process can become a barrier to confidence, dignity, and consistent school attendance when the right information and support are missing.
This week, our team at Tufungize NexGeneration Foundation- TNF visited two of our partner schools to begin a new round of health and WASH education workshops focused on empowering students with knowledge and practical guidance.
At Kisowera Primary School, we held a dedicated Menstrual Health Management session with 32 Primary 6 girls. The discussion focused on understanding bodily changes during puberty, maintaining personal hygiene during menstruation, safe materials to use, proper disposal methods, and identifying trusted people at school and at home who girls can approach for support. Creating a safe space for open discussion helped many students ask questions they had previously felt shy to raise.
At Nakibanga Primary School, we conducted a personal hygiene and WASH education workshop with 70 students from Primary 4–Primary 6, including both boys and girls. The session emphasized daily hygiene practices, respect and support for classmates experiencing menstruation, and the importance of student leadership in maintaining healthy school environments. As part of this effort, we also worked with the school community to reinforce the role of WASH clubs, encouraging students to become ambassadors for hygiene and sanitation in their schools.
These conversations are small but powerful steps toward breaking stigma, improving health awareness, and ensuring that no girl misses school because of menstruation.
Impact:
• Partner schools reached: 2
• Students trained in hygiene and health awareness: 102
• MHM education sessions conducted: 1
• Girls reached through MHM education: 32
• School WASH clubs reinforced: 1
Through education, open dialogue, and community partnerships, we continue working toward schools where every child can learn with dignity, confidence, and good health.
