🌍 The Congo River: Earth’s Deepest River

The Congo River is a true liquid giant. It is the deepest river in the world, reaching depths of about 220 meters (720 feet) in some sections. Stretching approximately 4,700 km (2,920 miles), it is also Africa’s second-longest river, surpassed only by the Nile River.

Flowing through the green heart of Africa, the Congo winds across countries including the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of the Congo, serving as a vital waterway for transportation, trade, and the livelihoods of millions. Its extreme depth and powerful currents create intense rapids and rare phenomena such as massive underwater canyons invisible from the surface.

The Congo Basin is one of the richest ecosystems on Earth — a vast “green universe” filled with unique fish, mammals, and bird species.

🌊 Fascinating Facts

âś“ Water that travels far: The Congo discharges so much water into the Atlantic Ocean that its current can be detected hundreds of kilometers offshore.

✓ Giant rainforest: Its basin contains the world’s second-largest tropical rainforest, after the Amazon.

âś“ Mysterious fish: Scientists have discovered species adapted to total darkness, similar to cave-dwelling creatures.

âś“ Colossal energy potential: The river holds one of the greatest hydroelectric potentials on the planet.

âś“ Rare flow pattern: It is one of the few major rivers in the world that crosses the Equator twice.

British newspaper editor Brendon Grimshaw, working in East Africa, visited the Seychelles on holiday and fell in love with the idea of owning his own piece of paradise.

At the last moment, he purchased tiny Moyenne Island—a neglected, largely barren 24-acre (about 10-hectare) speck off Mahé's coast—for just £8,000 (roughly $10,000 then).

Overgrown with weeds and stripped of much native vegetation from past misuse, the island seemed desolate and unpromising.

Rather than developing it into a luxury resort despite tempting multimillion-dollar offers from developers—including one reportedly as high as $50 million—Grimshaw committed his life to restoration.

He moved there permanently, enlisting local helper René Antoine Lafortune as his lifelong collaborator. Together they planted over 16,000 native trees, slowly reforesting the landscape and rebuilding soil health. They constructed winding nature trails, eradicated invasive species, and created habitats that invited wildlife back.

Grimshaw reintroduced more than 100 Aldabra giant tortoises—endangered elsewhere in the region—whose grazing helped maintain ecological balance. Birds returned in huge numbers, with thousands of species now thriving, turning the once-quiet island into a vibrant biodiversity hotspot teeming with endemic plants, reptiles, and avian life.

He rejected commercialization, insisting the island should remain accessible to all rather than an elite getaway. Before his death in 2012 at age 87, Grimshaw established a trust and signed an agreement with the Seychelles government, designating Moyenne Island National Park—the world's smallest—with special protected status within the broader Sainte Anne Marine National Park.

Today it stands as a testament to one determined individual's vision, proving that dedicated, hands-on conservation can revive an ecosystem and preserve it indefinitely for nature and future generations.
