Empowering Young Minds, Building Safer Schools.

This week, SSURA took meaningful conversations beyond the classrooms through a series of school outreaches focused on empowering learners with knowledge and awareness to make informed positive choices.
We visited 5 schools in Koboko municipality including Ombachi Self-Help secondary school, Apa primary school, Terermunga primary school, Abele primary school and Birijaku primary school.

Our engagements explored some of the issues affecting pupils and students in schools today including drug abuse, teenage pregnancy, social cohesion and children rights, and strikes and primary hygiene.
Teenage pregnancy
Both boys and girls were educated on the effects of teenage pregnancy and preventive measures like abstinence, consuming correct information, joining clubs and mentorship programs in schools.

However, a strong message was also left behind: pregnant student/pupil is still a student/pupil, she needs health care, counselling and a chance to go back to school without judgment.

On drug abuse, the effects and dangers were clearly explained and referral pathways including; choosing responsible friends, talking to trusted friends, teachers, counselors or parents and joining clubs that keep them busy during their free time like sports and debate.

Social cohesion: Encouraging respect, tolerance, peaceful coexistence and unity among learners.

School Strikes: focused on encouraging both teachers and pupils/students to create spaces for dialogue on the cause of unrest and promote constructive, peaceful ways of addressing grievances.

Beyond sharing information, these outreaches created an opportunity for learners to ask questions, share experiences, and engage in open conversations about issues that directly affect their lives.

When young people are informed, heard and empowered, they are better equipped to make positive choices and contribute to safer, more inclusive and peaceful school communities.

Over 90% of urban farmers in Koboko Municipality are affected by low quality and quantity farm production due over cultivation of the limited farm land available in the urban area. This hinders soil fertility, reduce crop yields, sustainability and income generation through agricultural activities.

To enable the Displacement Affected Communities (DACs) and host Community farmers thrive, SSURA conducted a 2 day training of DACs and host community urban farmers in Koboko Municipality. The objective was to increase access to nutrient dense foods for households, have access to agro inputs and generate income from sales of the farm products while utilizing the limited available land.

The training focused on soil and plant nutrition which gave the farmers both practical skills and knowledge on boosting soil fertility by using sustainable local fertilizers/manure like cow dung, goat and chicken droppings, potatoes and matooke peelings and plant leaves among others. To avert pests and diseases, they were also trained on local pesticides formulation using red pepper, onions, garlic, black jack and ash.

The training follows efforts by the project to target agriculture primarily as a green and climate-resilient economic driver to foster self-reliance and social cohesion, empower both refugees and host communities to mitigate urban food insecurity and generate reliable income.

Agriculture serves as a vital component of the program's economic integration strategy, particularly in West Nile hubs like Arua City and Koboko Municipality.

The Sustainable Urban Integration of Displacement Affected Communities (SUIDAC) is a project funded by European Union with support from Cities Alliance. It is technically implemented by Associazione Centro Aiuti Volontari - ACAV ETS in Arua City and Koboko Municipality in collaboration with co-implementing partners including South Sudanese Refugee Association among others.

Safety is the first Skill: Equipped for Excellence by distributing Personal Protective Equipment to Young Trainees.

SSURA distributed protective equipment to the young trainees for the advanced integrated skilling program under the project as training starts, which included; overalls, aprons, overcoats, gloves headgears, wielding eye glasses, shoes and gumboots among others.

This aims at providing a safe conducive environment for training and learning for the youth, prioritizing their safety and compliance with safety standards. The protective equipment will prevent injuries and reduce exposure to workplace hazards during practical training.

One of the objectives of the project is to empower youth both refugees and host by providing market-driven skills, vocational training and apprenticeship to boost self-reliance and sustainable livelihoods.
Over 540,000 youth are set to benefit from the Project in both Arua City and Koboko Municipality.

The project is funded by the European Union with support from Cities Alliance Cities Alliance and technical implementation by Associazione Centro Aiuti Volontari - ACAV ETS . Other co-implementing partners include SSURA, LIDIT, SPEDP and UREA

As we celebrate World Youth Skills Day, we celebrate the power of skills to transform lives, strengthen communities and build resilient communities.

SSURA continues to advocate for integrated, strategic, advanced and market-oriented skilling programs that equip young people with the knowledge and practical competencies needed to thrive in today’s changing world. By investing in relevant skills, we are creating pathways to economic development, decent employment, entrepreneurship and sustainable livelihoods.

As we mark this day, let us continue working together, to ensure every young person has access to quality skills that match the market demands, unlock opportunities, and contribute to inclusive sustainable development.

Integrated skilling provides the youth with entrepreneurship, financial literacy, life skills, and workplace readiness to prepare them for the evolving demands of the labour market. This holistic approach equips young people to secure decent employment, create enterprises and adapt to changing economies.

SSURA is one of the co-implementing partners of the SUIDAC project in Koboko Municipality aiming at equipping the youth with integrated, strategic and advanced for economic empowerment and Sustainable Urban Integration of Displacement Affected Communities.

The SUIDAC project is funded by European Union, supported by Cities Alliance. Associazione Centro Aiuti Volontari - ACAV ETS is the technical implementing partner with co-implementing partners including; SSURA, URAEA, and SPEDP.

Empowering Inclusion and Sustainable Livelihoods in Bidibidi Settlement.

This week, farmers in Bidibidi Refugee settlement received 304 poultry birds with each getting 8 birds, to strengthen the inclusion of older persons and persons with disabilities (PWDs), many of whom face challenges participating in labor-intensive farm activities.
The farmers last year received 5 birds each and through poultry rearing, their households have been able to get eggs for improved family nutrition while generating income from the sale of multiplied birds and eggs. The additional income enables them rent land and hire labor for cultivation, promoting both dignity and self-reliance.

In addition, farmers received 120 sacks of cassava cuttings, participated in practical demonstrations on best agronomic practices including intercropping, training on techniques that improve water retention and soil health for better and sustainable yields, maximize land use and increase household food production.

SSURA under the LEAD Uganda project prioritizes food security, promote economic development and improved livelihoods while focusing on organic farming, crop diversification, conservation agriculture, financial and entrepreneurship inclusion, gender equitable practices, improved water management practices, enhance farmers’ resilience to climate change, and ultimately drive socio-economic growth.

To many refugees in Uganda, safety is not just the absence of violence anymore, due to the funding cuts, refugees struggle to provide for their families with many surviving on only one meal a day and barely enough for the next day.

Refugees need to be included both socially and economically for them to improve their livelihoods, live dignified lives and feel safe.

Economic and social inclusion is not only a pathway to self-reliance, it is also an investment in stronger, more prosperous, and more cohesive societies.
Refugees bring skills and potential that enrich our communities when given the opportunity to thrive.

On this , we stand in solidarity with refugees around the world and reaffirm their fundamental right to seek safety, protection, and dignity.
Let us continue to champion inclusion, break down barriers, and create opportunities for refugees to feel safe, contribute, belong, and rebuild their lives with hope and dignity.

Together, we can ensure that every refugee has the chance to safety and belonging wherever they are.
