Womenโ€™s Empowerment in Peacebuilding and Conflict Resolution โ€” Arua City

Women are not merely victims or beneficiaries of peaceโ€”they are powerful agents of peace, dialogue, reconciliation, and social transformation.

In Arua City, empowering women to meaningfully participate in peacebuilding and conflict resolution is essential for building safer, more inclusive and resilient communities. Women bring unique experiences, perspectives and leadership skills that can help communities address conflicts before they escalate into violence.

We must strengthen womenโ€™s participation in community dialogue, early warning and early response, mediation, leadership, prevention of violent extremism, countering hate speech and misinformation, and decision-making processes.

Peace cannot be sustainable when half of the community is excluded from shaping it.

Let us create opportunities for women and girls to speak, lead, mediate and contribute to solutions. By investing in womenโ€™s leadership today, we are investing in a more peaceful and cohesive Arua City tomorrow.

Womenโ€™s voices matter. Womenโ€™s leadership matters. Women are essential partners in building peace.

We were honoured to be represented by Hon. Nadia Hassan Iddi at the National Peace Leadership Conference, held at Fairway Hotel, Kampala, under the theme:

โ€œYouth Against Misinformation, Disinformation and Hate Speech.โ€

Hon. Nadia also actively participated in a panel discussion on โ€œYouth Leadership in Countering Misinformation, Disinformation and Hate Speech Online,โ€ contributing valuable perspectives on the role of young people in promoting responsible digital engagement and peaceful coexistence.

The discussion highlighted the growing influence young people have in shaping conversations both online and offline. While digital platforms can be used to spread misinformation, disinformation and hateful narratives, they can equally become powerful spaces for peacebuilding, dialogue, civic engagement, empathy and positive storytelling.

Young people have a responsibility to think critically, verify information before sharing, challenge harmful narratives, promote respectful dialogue and use their voices to buildโ€”not divideโ€”our communities.

We believe that youth leadership is central to building a safer, more inclusive and peaceful digital environment.

Together, let us make our voices instruments of truth, tolerance, dialogue and peace.

Peace is everyoneโ€™s responsibility.

As the late Kofi Annan reminded us, building peaceful, stable and inclusive communities is not the responsibility of governments and institutions alone. It requires each of us to play an active role and refuse to remain bystanders when our communities face division, hatred, violence or injustice.

Peace is built through the choices we make every dayโ€”how we speak to one another, how we respond to disagreements, how we treat people who are different from us, and how willing we are to listen, understand and seek common ground.

As young people, community leaders, religious and cultural leaders, civil society and citizens, we all have a role to play. We can challenge misinformation and hate speech, promote dialogue, protect human dignity, support those who are vulnerable, and create spaces where differences can be discussed without turning into conflict.

Peace does not begin somewhere far away. It begins with us, in our homes, communities, workplaces and online spaces.

Let us choose dialogue over division, empathy over hatred, truth over misinformation, and cooperation over conflict.

Together, our everyday actions can prevent violence, strengthen trust and help build safer, more peaceful and inclusive communities for everyone.

Peace is not simply the absence of violenceโ€”it is the presence of justice, dignity, understanding and hope.

Great Lakes ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฉ ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡ผ ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฎ ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฌ United for Peace: Together Against Hate Speech

The Great Lakes Region Forum for Peace and Social Cohesion in Rwanda ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡ผ was a timely reminder that peace can be weakened not only by weapons, but also by words, narratives and information that divide communities.

From 23โ€“25 September 2026, Peace Fellows and peacebuilding actors from Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo came together in Rwanda for dialogue on peace, social cohesion, hate speech and disinformation, alongside the launch of the Regional Campaign Against Hate Speech.

One of the key lessons for me was the need to better understand the difference between misinformation, disinformation and hate speech.

1. Misinformation is false or inaccurate information shared without necessarily intending to cause harm.

2. Disinformation involves false or manipulated information deliberately created or shared to deceive, manipulate or cause harm.

3. Hate speech goes beyond disagreement or criticism. It targets people because of who they are or the community they belong to and can deepen discrimination, hostility and, in some circumstances, contribute to violence.

In the Great Lakes region, where communities share histories, borders, cultures and identities, harmful narratives can travel quickly across bordersโ€”especially through social media. The UN Special Envoy for the Great Lakes has similarly highlighted how hate speech can deepen ethnic divisions, undermine social cohesion and threaten peace efforts.

That is why young people must be part of the solution.

We need young people who can:

1. Verify information before sharing it.
2. Challenge harmful narratives without amplifying them.
3. Promote responsible digital citizenship.
4. Create alternative narratives that build trust rather than fear.
5. Use early warning and early response mechanisms to identify emerging tensions.
6. Promote dialogue across ethnic, religious, national and generational boundaries.
7. Use social media as a tool for peacebuilding rather than division.

The Forum also reminded us that peacebuilding is not only about responding to conflict after it happens. It is also about preventing the narratives that make conflict easier to imagine, justify and spread.

As young people of the Great Lakes region, our voices matter. We can choose whether our platforms become spaces for suspicion and hatredโ€”or spaces for truth, dignity, dialogue, solidarity and peace.

Let us challenge misinformation.
Let us expose disinformation.
Let us reject hate speech.
Let us promote dialogue.
Let us build social cohesion.

We were honored to be represented by Hon. Nadia Iddi Hassan Nadia Hassan at the Great Lakes Forum for Peace and Social Cohesion and the Launch of the Regional Campaign Against Hate Speech, taking place in Rwanda ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡ผ.

The forum brings together leaders, young people, civil society actors, and other stakeholders from across the Great Lakes region to strengthen dialogue, promote social cohesion, and address the growing challenge of hate speech and narratives that can fuel division and violence.

For a region with a long history of communities affected by conflict and mistrust, initiatives like this remind us that peace is not built by governments and institutions alone. It is also built through the everyday choices we make, the words we use, and how we engage with one another.

We believe that young people, religious and cultural leaders, civil society, and communities have a critical role to play in promoting messages of peace, tolerance, dignity, and coexistence.

Our participation reflects our continued commitment to supporting peacebuilding, social cohesion, youth participation, and the prevention of hate speech and violent extremism across the Great Lakes region.

Together against hate speech. Together for peace. Together for a more peaceful and united Great Lakes region.
