Acted Ukraine, Sumy (2026)

Countless people in Ukraine have lost their jobs and sources of income as a consequence of the war. Funded by the European Union (EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid), Acted provides livelihood grants to vulnerable families, helping them start or rebuild home-based economic activities and reduce their reliance on humanitarian aid.

In Sumy Oblast, one of the regions most impacted by the ongoing conflict, 300 families have received this support, including Olena, Valentyna, Svitlana, and Mariia.

🐄 Olena bought a cow and hay after losing both her husband and her job. Today, she sells dairy products in her village and nearby markets, which allows her to cover her basic needs.
🐇 Valentyna, a single pensioner, invested in rabbits and chickens. Just months later, she has eggs for personal consumption and for sale and has managed to raise the number of rabbits.
🐖 Svitlana, a single mother of two toddlers, purchased piglets that brought, not only income opportunities, but also renewed hope and joy to her children.
🍯 Mariia and her family, displaced from their home, were able to restart their beekeeping activity by purchasing a honey extractor and renewing their hives. They now plan to expand the number of bee colonies.

These grants are more than financial support. They are a reminder that they are not alone and that a future is still possible💙💛

Безліч людей в Україні втратили роботу та джерела доходу внаслідок війни. За підтримки Європейського Союзу (EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid), Aктед надає гранти на підтримку засобів до існування вразливим родинам. Це дає можливість відновити або започаткувати власну діяльність вдома та поступово зменшити залежність від гуманітарної допомоги.
У Сумській області - одному з прифронтових регіонів, що потерпає від війни - таку підтримку отримали 300 родин. Серед них Олена, Валентина, Світлана та Марія.

🐄 Олена втратила чоловіка та роботу. Завдяки гранту вона змогла придбати корову та сіно. Сьогодні Олена продає молочну продукцію у своєму селі та на найближчих ринках, що допомагає закривати базові потреби.
🐇 Валентина, самотня пенсіонерка, за отримані кошти придбала кролів та курей. Вже за кілька місяців вона отримувала яйця як для себе, так і на продаж. Валентині навіть вдалося збільшити поголів'я кролів.
🐖 Світлана, одинока мати двох малюків, придбала поросят, що дало можливість не лише отримувати дохід, але й повернуло надію та радість дітям.
🍯 Марія та її родина, вимушено переміщені зі свого дому, змогли відновити бджільництво. Родина придбала медогонку та оновила вулики. Тепер вони планують розширити пасіку.

Ці гранти - це більше, ніж фінансова підтримка. Це нагадування родинам, що вони не самі, і що майбутнє все ж таки можливе 💙💛

🤝 Acted and the SYLA consortium partners work hand in hand with communities to help save lives, prepare for emergencies, and recover swiftly to return to normal life.

Since May 2024, Acted, together with the Ukrainian Red Cross, German Red Cross, Danish Red Cross, and IMPACT, has been implementing the SYLA project, funded by the European Union, aiming to strengthen community preparedness and early response capacities to respond to disaster across Ukraine.

Over the past months, Acted met with representatives from Hromadas in the East and South of Ukraine to update their disaster preparedness plans. Communities highlighted key environmental challenges: frequent emergencies such as shelling and field fires during the hot seasons, lack of equipment, and the need to revise civil protection procedures.

"Our hromada cannot cope with the needs of civil protection on its own. We face acute challenges, such as unauthorized landfills and frequent field fires. Ongoing shelling creates an additional risk of fires at these landfills, which are extremely dangerous and difficult to control. Such incidents cause damage to agricultural land, crops, and residential areas. To respond to theses, we are interested in increasing our capacity and cooperation within the project to ‘build back better.” said Viktor Ivanovych, Acting Head of Stepivska Hromada, in Mykolaivska Oblast.

Following the discussions, communities agreed to establish working groups to update their preparedness plans, an important first step on the path to Resilience.

Acted та партнери консорціуму SYLA працюють пліч-о-пліч з громадами, щоб допомогти врятувати життя, підготуватися до надзвичайних ситуацій та швидко відновити нормальне життя.

З травня 2025 року за підтримки Європейського Союзу Acted співпрацює з Українським Червоним Хрестом, Німецьким Червоним Хрестом, Данським Червоним Хрестом та IMPACT з метою зміцнення готовності громад та їхніх можливостей реагування по всій країні.

Протягом останніх місяців Acted зустрічалися з місцевими представниками на сході та півдні України, щоб допомогти їм оновити плани готовності до надзвичайних ситуацій. Громади поділилися своїми проблемами: часті надзвичайні ситуації, такі як обстріли та пожежі на полях у спекотні сезони, брак обладнання та необхідність перегляду процедур цивільного захисту.

«Ми стикаємося з багатьма проблемами, такими як несанкціоновані звалища та часті пожежі на полях. Постійні обстріли створюють додатковий ризик пожеж, які є надзвичайно небезпечними та важко контрольованими. Такі інциденти завдають шкоди сільськогосподарським угіддям, врожаю та житловим районам. Наша громада не може самостійно впоратися з цими проблемами. Ми зацікавлені в збільшенні наших можливостей та співпраці, щоб «відбудувати краще», – сказав Віктор Іванович, виконуючий обов'язки голови Степівської громади в Миколаївській області.

Зараз громади формують місцеві робочі групи, щоб обмінюватися досвідом та зробити свої плани більш надійними та практичними, роблячи важливий перший крок на шляху до стійкості.

As fighting intensifies in eastern Ukraine, a new wave of large-scale mandatory evacuations is underway. In the past few weeks only, thousands of people have fled Donetsk and Dnipropetrovsk regions. Transit centers in Dnipropetrovska and Kharkivska regions started to receive up to 450 newly evacuated people each day, with a following decreased number of evacuees, while they search for safe housing solutions. Families with children, older people, and people with disabilities are forced to leave everything behind, arriving with only a few belongings and little means to restart their lives in safety.
🤝With the support of , since 18 August 2025, Acted is providing rapid multi-purpose cash assistance to help evacuated families arriving in transit centers cover their most urgent basic needs as soon as they arrive.
To date, more than 1,600 people have already been registered by Acted in Pavlohrad, Lozova and Voloske transit centers to receive multi-purpose cash assistance. Acted Cash programme team remains present in Voloske transit center every day to support vulnerable people continuing to evacuate from frontline areas.

🏫 From damage to hope: structural repairs at conflict-affected schools in Chernihiv region 🧑‍🎓
Through the RestoreEdu project, funded by , Acted has rehabilitated this school in Chernihiv region after it sustained serious damage from a missile strike. The structural repair works included insulating the facade, upgrading heating and lighting systems, restoring shelter and sports hall, and improving accessibility with a ramp, lift, and inclusive bathrooms. The school also received modern educational equipment to strengthen the learning process.
In a conversation with Acted, the school’s principal, Viktoriia Mykhailivna, shared how these upgrades have transformed the gymnasium into a safe, inclusive, and well-equipped place for learning – helping students regain a sense of stability and hope.

🚌 RestoreEdu – a brighter future of students in Ukraine 🎓

With the support of France Diplomatie, Acted, in its project RestoreEdu, has rehabilitated, renovated and equipped schools across Chernihiv and Kharkiv regions of Ukraine. RestoreEdu ensures that children and teachers have safe spaces to continue education, which has suffered dramatically since 2022. Since 2023, more than 60 schools and 31,000 students have benefitted from a range of works including structural and non-structural repairs, bomb shelter renovations, and the donation of supplies, equipment and school buses.

By Building Back Better, RestoreEdu not only restores education in conflict-affected areas but also promotes sustainability and inclusion, ensuring that all children — including girls and those with disabilities — can learn in safe, adapted and modernized environments.

За підтримки France Diplomatie, Acted у межах проєкту RestoreEdu відремонтував та обладнав школи в Чернігівській та Харківській областях України. RestoreEdu дає можливість дітям та вчителям продовжити навчання в безпечних просторах, адже багато шкіл значно постраждали з 2022 року. З 2023 року понад 60 шкіл було відремонтовано, включаючи структурні та неструктурні ремонти, реконструкцію укриттів, а також передано обладнання та шкільні автобуси, що дозволило понад 31 000 учнів повернутися до навчання.

🔧Safe spaces for learning: constructing bomb shelters to support resilient education 📚
A big step forward for safer education in Northern Ukraine!
As part of the project, and with the support of , Acted has completed the construction of a fully equipped antiradiation bomb shelter in Nizhyn, Chernihiv oblast.
The shelter isn’t just concrete walls — it’s fitted with ventilation, fire safety systems, water supply, lighting, and full interior finishing to make it a safe and usable learning space.
— This means that when air raid alerts sound, students and teachers can continue their lessons underground, without putting education on hold.
For the children of Nizhyn, who have grown up under more than three years of aerial attacks, this shelter is more than protection — it’s a chance to keep building their future.

Від міні-гранту до відчутного впливу: як волонтерка сприяла відновленню своєї громади

Гуманітарна допомога через волонтерів, активістів та мережі (HAVEN) сприяє відновленню стійкості та життєздатності громад, що постраждали від війни в Україні, за фінансової підтримки UKAid та народу Великої Британії British Embassy Kyiv
Починаючи з 2024 року, Acted надала 41 мінігрант для підтримки локальних ініціатив у Запорізькій та Харківській областях, перетворюючи ідеї на реальні зміни для громад. 🌱
💡 Одну з таких ініціатив очолила Ірина, мешканка села Тернувате на Запоріжжі. Не маючи попереднього досвіду у написанні грантів, але маючи багато креативу та соціальну ініціативність, вона подала заявку на міні-грант від Acted, і успішно реалізувала свій проєкт!
✨ Побачивши, як ідея та невеликий проєкт можуть позитивно вплинути на громаду, що постраждала від війни, Ірина не зупинилася. Крок за кроком, ініціатива за ініціативою, і вже у 2025 році разом із невеликою командою волонтерів вона офіційно зареєструвала першу громадську організацію у Тернуватській громаді.
Зараз, у рамках третьої фази проєкту HAVEN, організація Ірини реалізує більший грант та розширює свій вплив! 🤝
Ця історія демонструє, як цільова підтримка та довіра можуть надихати локальні ініціативи на тривалі та змістовні зміни й відновлення, навіть у кризовий час.

From Mini-Grant to Tangible Impact: How a volunteer empowered her community's recovery

The Humanitarian Action through Volunteers, Enablers and Network (HAVEN), is helping restore local resilience and recovery across war-affected communities in Ukraine with the financial support of UKAid and the people of the United Kingdom, British Embassy Kyiv.
Since 2024, Acted distributed 41 mini-grants to support local initiatives in the Zaporizhzhia and Kharkiv regions turning ideas into meaningful changes for communities. 🌱
💡 One of these initiatives was led by Iryna, a resident of the village of Ternuvate in Zaporizhzhia region. With no prior experience in grants writing, but a lot of creativity and a strong sense of initiative, she applied to Acted’s mini-grant and successfully implemented it !
✨ Seeing the positive impact of an idea and a small-scale project on her war-affected community, Iryna continued. Step by step, initiative after initiative, and by 2025, she and a small team of volunteers had officially registered the first civil society organization in the Ternuvate community.
Now, under the third phase of the HAVEN project, Iryna’s organisation is implementing larger grants and scaling up its impact! 🤝
This story illustrate how targeted support and trust can empower grassroot initiatives to drive meaningful and lasting changes and recovery, even in the times crisis.

With the support of .affairs.canada , Acted is organizing educational sessions for students in Chernihivska oblast, exploring future professions in Ukraine’s recovery.
🧰 From modern construction techniques and materials to inclusive and smart design, students learn how they can help rebuild Ukraine.
🙌 Part of the “Securing Women’s Economic Empowerment for Recovery and Development” (SEED) project, the sessions aim to empower girls by challenging gender stereotypes in traditionally male-dominated fields.
🛑 Thanks to and the RestoreEdu project, students can focus on learning, knowing their school’s bomb shelter is ready in case of an emergency.

In Chernihivska oblast, near the frontlines, many people face daily challenges due to the ongoing war, compounded by financial and health issues. Despite the uncertainties, Kateryna* and Olena*’s stories reflect the incredible resilience and determination of families fighting for a better future.
👩‍👧 Kateryna*, a young mother of two expecting her third child, lives in a small village with her family. Her husband works as a school security guard, but their income falls below the minimum living wage. She gave birth to her second daughter during the occupation of her region in 2022.
👵 Olena* and her husband, both retired, are facing the hardships of aging in a conflict zone. Olena struggles with mobility while Maksym deals with health issues due to a previous heart attack.
💸 With support from , Acted and have are supporting over 37,000 war-affected individuals in 2024–2025 through multi-purpose cash assistance (MPCA), helping families like Kateryna’s and Olena’s meet their most urgent needs.
🤲 Cash assistance is one of the most efficient ways to support people where markets remain functional, ensuring their dignity and autonomy by allowing them to use the assistance exactly how it is needed.
