Over the past few days, Odessa has been under constant attacks. Widespread power outages, heating disruptions, and even water shortages in many areas have made daily life extremely challenging. In these dark times, we feel acutely how fragile and painful the world can be—and how important it is not to let darkness settle in our hearts.

This year, we celebrated Hanukkah together at the Shirat Ha-Yam community—with heavy hearts for the recent terror attack in Sydney, and yet with a deep need to be close to one another. Despite everything, adults and children gathered to light hope within themselves, connect it with the warmth of others, and pass it forward—so that many small lights together could create a glow stronger than the darkness.

It was a great honor for us to share the lighting of the first candle with WUPJ Vice President Mr. Eyal Ronder Eyal Ronder, who wholeheartedly supports all communities in Ukraine. This celebration was made possible thanks to the financial support of the World Union for Progressive Judaism (WUPJ) World Union for Progressive Judaism • WUPJ and the assistance of the Odessa–Poltava Committee of the Beth Am congregation (Los Altos Hills, CA). We are deeply grateful to Cherie Half Cherie Half and all our friends for their participation, solidarity, and support.

With the care and guidance of our community chair, Elena Izmailova, and the participation of Shlichim program leaders, we created a Hanukkah space filled with music, dancing, engaging programs, and heartfelt connection. Rabbi Julia Gris joined us online and shared rabbinical insights about the symbolism of the Hanukkiah as a model for human society. Through this celebration, we do not merely commemorate the miracle experienced by our ancestors, but also bring a public witness to the values we cherish.

Hanukkah teaches us to act not out of certainty, but out of faith. Not to close ourselves off from the world’s pain, but to respond with light, responsibility, and presence for one another.

May we keep this light within us, unite it, and pass it forward.
May the light prevail over darkness.

Chag Hanukkah Sameach. 🕯️@топовые поклонники
