My name is Elizabeth and I cannot pass by a suffering animal on the street. There are many sick and abandoned animals on the streets of Mykolaiv. These animals cannot survive without help because of their physical condition (sickness/ injury) or because they are not adapted to life on the streets (finding food/ crossing roads etc.). I try to rescue as many of these animals as my finance and time a
llow for. Most of the cats and kittens that I recue, I foster in my own home apartment. For dogs and puppies, I have to find foster care or a vet clinic that would take them in. Once I have taken an animal into my care, I make sure that they have all their medical needs met. Once they are healthy and free of parasites, I organise for them to be sterilised (if they are old enough) and vaccinated. I then advertise on local groups to find them a forever loving home. I always try to keep in contact with their new families and help with any questions or problems that might occur. In Mykolaiv, there are also animals that were born and raised on the streets. They are well adapted to finding food and hiding places and feel at home in their environment. In these cases, I try to organise for the animals to be sterilised so that they don’t give birth to more street animals. In the case of dogs, there is a government funded service to catch, sterilise, vaccinate and release street dogs. For cats, I have to physically catch them myself, take them to a private vet clinic and return them to their area.
