📰 Weekly roundup. Ukraine resists Russia’s invasion. Days 1,566-1,570

⚔️ This week, battles continued to rage along the front lines. Ukrainian strikes on military sites and oil refining infrastructure are increasingly inflicting pain deep inside Russia. The strikes also target Russia’s supply lines in Ukraine’s territory it holds.

📈 Ukraine liberated almost 100 square kilometers more land in May than it lost to Russia, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, General Oleksandr Syrskyi said Monday. Russia is likely withdrawing forces from the Kinburn Spit in Mykolayiv region as Ukraine strikes its supply lines, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said on Monday.

⛽ Ukrainian strikes on Russia’s oil refining infrastructure are gaining traction. The Ukrainian military struck the Grushovaya oil depot in Russia’s Krasnodar Krai and the Krasnyi Yar linear production dispatch station in the Volgograd region on Sunday and overnight on Monday. Later in the week, Ukrainian drones struck Russia’s two oil pumping stations, 700 kilometers away from the Ukrainian border. Ukrainian drones struck the Afipsky oil refinery in Russia’s Krasnodar region overnight on Thursday, triggering a fire at the facility.

🚀 Ukrainian Flamingo FP-5 missiles struck the VNIIR Progress plant in Cheboksary, in Russia’s Chuvashiya region on Wednesday. The attack was the second to successfully target the plant in a little over a month. It demonstrates Russia’s inability to fully protect its military sites, news site Defense Express said.

🌉 Ukrainian aerial strikes on Russian supply routes in Ukraine’s occupied territory in the south are becoming increasingly felt by Russia. A Ukrainian drone attack on Tuesday damaged the Chonhar bridge that links the occupied part of Kherson region to Crimea. This was a second strike on the bridge in the past days. Ukraine is conducting a campaign to cut off Russian supply routes to Crimea. On Thursday, it struck four bridges around the Perekop Isthmus. Fuel trucks were unable to reach Sevastopol on Thursday, further sharpening fuel shortage. Ukraine has been able to range Russia’s supply routes that sit 160 kilometers behind the front line in a full, permanent and round-the-clock manner, a Ukrainian officer told the New Age Defense Forum in Berlin early in the week.

🎯 Ukraine conducts campaign to fully cut off Russian supply routes to Crimea, commander of Unmanned Systems Forces says. Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces are mapping out a campaign to cut Crimea off from Russia, Commander of the Unmanned Systems Forces, Major Robert Brovdi who goes by the call sign Magyar told Reuters in an interview published on Thursday.

🚚 Ukraine’s escalating drone strikes across Russian-occupied parts of the country have disrupted military logistics and fuel supplies, prompting authorities last month to introduce fuel rationing in Crimea, the article said.

🛣️ Within another month, Ukraine would have total control over the road, said Brovdi.

⚔️ June 14 marks the 135th anniversary of the birth of Yevhen Konovalets (1891–1938) — one of the most prominent figures of the Ukrainian national liberation movement of the 20th century, a colonel of the Ukrainian People's Republic Army, founder and commander of the legendary Sich Riflemen Corps, founder of the Ukrainian Military Organization (UVO), and the first leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN).

Under his command, the Sich Riflemen became the most combat-effective unit of the Ukrainian armed forces during the struggle for independence. They played a crucial role in defending the Ukrainian People's Republic and resisting Moscow-Bolshevik aggression. Following the defeat of the UPR, Yevhen Konovalets did not abandon the fight. He succeeded in uniting the scattered forces of the Ukrainian émigré community, building a powerful underground network, and bringing the Ukrainian cause to the attention of European political circles.

Konovalets’ greatest achievement was fostering a new generation of Ukrainian statesmen and revolutionaries who continued the struggle for independence in the decades that followed. Thanks to his organizational talent, the OUN evolved into an influential international movement with branches across Europe, while the idea of an independent Ukraine survived the darkest years of statelessness.

The Soviet authorities regarded Yevhen Konovalets as one of the Kremlin’s most dangerous enemies. After several failed assassination attempts, he was killed on May 23, 1938, in Rotterdam by a bomb concealed in a box of chocolates handed to him by NKVD agent Pavlo Sudoplatov.

His death was a severe blow to the Ukrainian national movement, but it did not halt the cause to which he had devoted his life. On the contrary, the martyrdom of the Leader transformed him into a symbol of resilience, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to Ukraine’s independence.

🎯 Ukraine ranges Russian supply lines near Mariupol in full, permanent, round-the-clock manner

🛰️ Western technology combined with expertise of local researchers and developers has allowed Ukraine to range the enemy’s supply lines that sit 160 kilometers behind the front line in a full, permanent and round-the-clock manner, Officer for Defense Sector Engagement of the 12th “Azov” Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine, Mykyta Puz told the New Age Defense Forum in Berlin.

⚔️ The current frontline is a blurred line, 30 to 40 kilometers wide that combines Ukrainian and Russian positions, trenches and mines.

🚜 Heavy military equipment can only move for some distance there until it gets noticed and destroyed.

📍 Ukrainian troops are doubling efforts to expand an area within range. He cited an example of the occupied city of Mariupol that came within range. Mariupol is 160 kilometers away from where the Ukrainian military is deployed to.

🚚 Ukraine’s attacks on Russian trucks, fuel reserves and manpower resulted in a Russian ban to move military trucks to the 100-kilometer zone that precedes the front line. The area could be expanded to 200 kilometers, Puz said.

📉 The longer Russian supply routes are becoming, the less possibilities they have in the front line.

🔥 Ukraine drones strike Afipsky oil refinery, triggering large fire

🚁 Ukrainian drones struck the Afipsky oil refinery in Russia’s Krasnodar region overnight on Thursday, triggering a fire at the facility.

🌙 Reports on social media said the attack began after midnight. Drones were heard passing by with several-minute breaks.

🎥 Videos posted to social media show air defenses at work and a large fire at the plant.

🚨 Russian officials in the Krasnodar region said falling drone debris fell in the town of Afipsky, causing a fire.

⛽ The Afipsky oil refinery is one of the largest in southern Russia. It processes more than 6 million tons of crude annually. The facility manufactures fuel that is used to supply the Russian army.

🎯 It has been frequently targeted in Ukraine’s aerial attacks. It was struck a number of times in August, September, November and December 2025, triggering fires.

🏭 During the previous strike on March 14, 2026, drones damaged the AT-22/4 primary crude oil processing unit, the refinery’s key technological part.

💥 Ukraine cuts off routes to Crimea for Russian troops

🌉 Explosions rocked Crimea and Russia’s Krasnodar region overnight on Thursday. Locals on social media said the bridges at the land entrance to Crimea near the Isthmus of Perekop were damaged, there were fires near Sevastopol and Simferopol and air defenses were at work in the Krasnodar region.

🚛 The Ukrainian military struck a convoy of around 50 trucks that were moving through Armyansk after traffic across the Chonhar bridge was halted, commander of the Dmytro Kotsyubaylo 1st Assault Regiment, Dmytro Filatov who goes by the call sign Perun, told Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne on Thursday.

⚠️ The Chonhar bridge sustained critical damage. Cargo and passenger traffic across the bridge was suspended. The bridge needs comprehensive repair work. Russia is building pontoon crossings nearby, Filatov said. They also changed their supply routes, they now run through Armyansk. Ukraine maintains full control of the situation, he added.

🔥 “Today, the traffic there was completely halted. We carried out yet another operation. We will later share how it went. After the Chonhar bridge was damaged, the enemy massed a large number of trucks with military supplies moving through Armyansk. During the attack, we succeeded to hit the trucks that were carrying fuel and ammunition. There were around 50 vehicles there, and we destroyed part of them,” Filatov said.

🎯 The Ukrainian military decided to hit the Chonhar bridge because they had intelligence that the enemy will use it to transport fuel. “Six hours passed between the decision and its implementation. We planned in advance the operation that targeted the bridge. We anticipated that they will use this way as well. That’s why we acted in advance,” he said.

🛣️ He also said the operation would have not been possible if other units hadn’t launched strikes against Mariupol and the road toward Berdyansk. “This is what led to a situation when the units deployed to the Hulyaipole direction are supplied not through the roads of Mariupol, but through Crimea. They started to use pontoon crossings to send trucks to Crimea and then travel here from Crimea. We got it and started to block their routes quite quickly. We continue to further weaken the adversary,” Filatov said.

🏛️ Ukraine’s parliament votes to increase defense spending

🗳️ The Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine’s parliament, passed the bill no.15224 on Wednesday to increase spending on the security and defense sector in 2026 by UAH 1.56 trillion. The bill passed by a vote of 242 to 19.

🇪🇺 Additional funds will come from the 45-billion euro part of EU’s Ukraine Support Loan program, of which 31.8 billion euro will be allocated for security and defense needs, Economichna Pravda said.

🪖 Additional UAH 1.3 billion of defense spending will be used to buy weapons, military equipment, ammunition and pay for repairs of equipment. Another UAH 174 billion is budgeted for the salaries of the military, and UAH 14.6 billion will be placed in reserve.

⚡ Ukraine will also use UAH 40 billion to prepare for winter. The funds will contribute to the protection of its critical infrastructure, preparation of boiler stations, cogeneration and reserve sources of power. Another UAH 40 billion will make part of the budget’s reserve fund.

⛽ Ukraine drones strike Russia’s two oil pumping stations 700 kilometers away from Ukraine border

🚁 The Alfa Special Operations Center of Ukraine’s Security Service struck the Vtorovo and Lobkovo oil pumping stations in Russia’s Vladimir region, the agency said on Wednesday. Both facilities are around 700 kilometers away from Ukraine’s border.

🏙️ The oil pumping stations supply fuel to Moscow.

🔄 “The stations’ main function is to pump diesel fuel to the Moscow ring oil products pipeline and move oil products to the Baltic Sea ports for exports, particularly, to the oil-loading Primorsk port,” the Security Service said.

🔥 Local authorities said fires were raging at two infrastructure installations after Ukrainian drone attacks. NASA FIRMS shows heat anomalies at both oil pumping stations, a sign of fires.

🎯 “Strikes against such facilities have strategic meaning as they are important parts of Russia’s fuel supply routes,” Ukraine’s Security Service said.

🎯 Ukraine’s second strike on critical military plant in Cheboksary reveals vulnerability of Russia’s air defenses

🚀 Ukrainian Flamingo FP-5 missiles struck the VNIIR Progress plant in Cheboksary, in Russia’s Chuvashiya region on Wednesday morning. The facility produces antennas that enable Russian drones and missiles to bypass Ukrainian air defenses. The Flamingo missiles travelled 1,000 kilometers into Russia to strike the factory, Ukrainian news site Defense Express said Wednesday. The attack was the second to successfully target the plant in a little over a month. It demonstrates Russia’s inability to fully protect all its military sites, Defense Express said.

❓ The exact number of missiles used in the attack is unknown. The episode also reveals Russia’s shortage of air defenses.

📅 Ukraine used six Flamingo missiles in the previous attack on the plant on May 5. One of them hit target and the rest were destroyed by Russia’s layered air defense system.

💥 The choice of Flamingo missiles over long-range strike drones is motivated by the missiles’ larger warhead, which increases the impact of the blast and shock wave.

🏭 The VNIIR Progress plant produces key components for Shahed drones, glide bombs, Iskander missiles and other weapons. Most importantly, it manufactures the Kometa antennas that Russia uses to bypass Ukraine’s air defenses, Defense Express said.

🚨 Local authorities warned of a missile alert in the Chuvashiya region early on Wednesday. Videos posted by locals to social media captured the missile’s flight over the city.

🌉 Ukraine drones strike bridge linking Kherson region to Crimea for second time in days

💥 A Ukrainian drone attack overnight on Tuesday damaged a bridge near the Chonhar village that links the occupied part of Kherson region to Crimea, Russian-installed governor of Kherson region, Vladimir Saldo said on Telegram. According to Ukrainian media, the bridge is one of the key routes that Russia uses to supply its southern grouping of forces. This is a second strike on the bridge in the past days.

🚫 Traffic on the bridge was halted, Saldo said. He advised the drivers to take alternative routes through Armyansk and Perekop.

🔧 Saldo said on Sunday, June 7, that the bridge sustained damage in an overnight drone attack. Traffic on the bridge was restored in reverse, Ukrainian media said.

⚔️ The June 7 strike is a joint operation of the Falanga-1 unit of the Dmytro Kotsyubaylo 1st Assault Regiment and the 475th Assault Regiment Code 9.2. Drones manufactured by the Fire Point company and fresh Behemoth drones were used in the attack, the Dmytro Kotsyubaylo 1st Assault Regiment said.
