Last night was another difficult one for Ukrainian firefighters and rescue workers.

As Russia launched a large-scale attack across Ukraine, emergency crews responded to dozens of incidents in Kyiv and other cities, working through the night to extinguish fires, rescue civilians, and deal with the consequences of the strikes.

Tragically, among those killed was a State Emergency Service of Ukraine firefighter. Russian forces carried out a cynical repeat strike in Dnipro while emergency crews were already on site eliminating the aftermath and rescuing people.

Every day, Ukrainian firefighters face fire, destruction and psychological burden of working in a constant state of danger, witnessing loss, trauma, and human suffering.

If you would like to support Ukrainian rescuers, please consider donating to our psychological support programme for Ukrainian firefighters.

Another night of mass Russian attacks across Ukraine became another night of relentless work for Ukrainian rescuers.

This is the daily reality for Ukraine’s first responders. They continue showing up despite exhaustion, danger, and targeted attacks on civilian infrastructure and emergency services.

Supporting Ukrainian rescuers means supporting those who stand between civilians and catastrophe every single day. By donating, you help provide rescuers with critical protective equipment, emergency response gear, firefighting tools, medical supplies, and psychological support resources needed to continue saving lives under extreme conditions.

Every contribution directly strengthens the ability of Ukrainian emergency crews to respond faster, work safer, and protect more civilians during attacks.

Last Thursday, Ukrainian people faced one of the hardest days of the war so far. 30 hours of constant air attacks.

Rescuers forced into danger to save lives.

Tragically, Kyiv was hit hard by missiles, resulting in a large number of fatalities. Rescuers worked for 28 hours under the constant fear of a possible double tap attack.

We support Ukrainian rescuers with independent mental health support, allowing a safe space where they can process emotions without judgement.

Brave Minds is there.

On the road between cities, inside fire stations, in conversations after difficult shifts, and in those small moments when firefighters and rescuers can finally pause for a while.

We stand beside rescuers and firefighters to support, listen, and create a space where they don’t have to carry everything alone 🫂

You can support Brave Minds and help us continue these visits and support sessions by donating to the project! Follow the link in comments.

This video is a small glimpse from our content manager Tania into what our work at Brave Minds actually looks like.

Here’s our team:
- Viktoriia, our lead psychologist, runs group sessions with rescuers.
- Ed, our project manager, makes sure everything runs smoothly and checks what equipment is needed on site.
- Tania, our content manager, documents these visits and shares the stories with the world.
- We also work with Mariia, another psychologist on our team. She mostly supports the project remotely, but sometimes joins us for these visits as well.

We make these visits to meet rescuers in person, to introduce who we are and what we do, and to build real trust. From our experience, this kind of connection works very differently: when we show up, talk face to face, and they can actually see us, hear us, and understand that we’re real people. During the group sessions rescuers can get a sense of what this kind of support feels like, whether it resonates with them, and what they might want to work through. For many, it becomes the first step toward reaching out.

Brave Minds has been running for a year now. In that time, we’ve managed to do a lot, and we truly want to keep going.

🫂 But to continue this work, we need support.

Yesterday, we honoured them on International Firefighters' Day. Last night, they were tragically killed during a double tap strike where they were carrying out their duty — saving the lives of others.

This happened in the Poltava region. Two rescuers were killed — Viktor Kuzmenko and Dmytro Skryl. 23 more rescuers sustained injuries of varying severity.

Viktor Kuzmenko, Deputy Head of the Operational Coordination Centre of the State Emergency Service in the Poltava region, was a Hero of Ukraine. Under his leadership, 17 people were rescued following the strike on Poltava in 2024. He took part in more than 50 operations responding to the aftermath of shelling, preventing technogenic disasters and personally extinguishing fires at critical infrastructure facilities.

Firefighter-rescuer Dmytro Skryl devoted over 20 years to service in the State Emergency Service. He repeatedly responded to complex fires at oil and gas facilities caused by attacks. A dedicated professional who carried out his duty where it was most difficult.

We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones. Eternal memory to the fallen 🕯️

FIRE AID have been working alongside firefighters around the world for over a decade. And we know: every place comes with its own challenges.

🌍 In parts of Africa, firefighters often rely on determination and shared knowledge: training local communities to protect themselves and each other.
🇳🇵 In countries like Nepal, we support national services with equipment and training, strengthening systems before emergencies happen.
🇪🇺 Across Europe and beyond, we learn from each other, adapt, and grow stronger together.
🇺🇦 And in Ukraine, firefighters do all of this while working under the constant threat of war.

We honor every firefighter, everywhere for the courage it takes to show up and keep going no matter the conditions. Thank you for your service!

This is the part we don’t always see, but it’s the one that needs protection too. It’s mind.

It can’t be shielded by even the most advanced gear. No matter how fire-resistant the clothing is, how durable the equipment is, how prepared someone is physically — none of it can fully protect from the impact of working in the reality of war.

Brave Minds focus on supporting that inner layer helping first responders process, recover, and stay resilient.

We often see the moments of rescue: children pulled from the rubble, families reunited, lives saved against all odds. These are the stories that give us hope and remind why this work matters so much.

But behind them are also the stories we don’t see, the ones that don’t have a happy ending, the ones that rescuers carry with them long after the sirens fade. Not every life can be saved, not everything they witness can simply be left behind without consequences.

Every day, they face situations that leave a lasting mark, carrying memories, loss, and emotional weight that builds over time. And this is exactly why they need support as a necessity.

Brave Minds is an independent organization providing free psychological support to first responders, helping them process their experiences and continue their work without losing themselves.

If you want to support us, please consider donating to our project. Your contribution helps us be there for those who are always there for others ⬇️
