🔦 GRM Clinician Spotlight

Paul Loos, former U.S. Army Special Forces Medical Sergeant (18D), Vice President of Special Projects at Ragged Edge Solutions, and founder of the Prolonged Field Care Collective, and Course Director for the STORM-2 Surgical Teams Course, helped lead the training in Kyiv, Ukraine, in March 2026.

Founded by military veterans, GRM continues to rely on the expertise of experienced military medical professionals to deliver direct medical support and strengthen the capabilities of frontline healthcare teams through training and mentorship.

Drawing on decades of operational and medical experience, Paul helped mentor participants through realistic scenarios designed to strengthen clinical decision-making, teamwork, and trauma care skills in austere and resource-constrained environments.

🫀No one saves a life alone.

The most valuable lesson from STORM-2 wasn’t a procedure or a piece of equipment—it was teamwork.

Through realistic simulations, prolonged casualty scenarios, and high-pressure decision-making exercises, Ukrainian medical teams strengthened the communication and coordination needed to care for patients in one of the world’s most challenging environments.

The result?

Four years ago today, the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began.

1,461 days later, Ukrainian communities are still under attack. Energy infrastructure targeted. Hospitals hit. Families displaced — again and again.

The headlines have moved on. We haven't.

GRM has been on the ground in Ukraine since the early days, and we're still there — working alongside Ukrainian healthcare professionals who refuse to let the system break.

Here's what that looks like right now:
→ Our Surgical Teams Course is training Ukrainian surgeons, nurses, and medics for the reality of prolonged field care — where the "golden hour" doesn't exist and evacuation can take a full day.
→ The Brain Health Hub is becoming Ukraine's first dedicated national treatment center for veterans with traumatic brain injury and mental health conditions.
→ Our teams continue emergency response operations, filling gaps that get wider as the world's attention narrows.

This isn't about us. It's about our Ukrainian colleagues who continue to fight, to protect, to defend. It’s about their neighbors, their friends, and their family who will not leave their homes, who are surviving the coldest winter in years, and who refuse to give up.

Ukrainian healthcare professionals who have operated through blackouts. Treated patients during air raids. Held the line when no one was watching.

We show up because they show up. Every single day.

“This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine."

Pete Reed learned those words as a Marine. It was always about more than a weapon. It’s about responsibility and ownership.

He brought that same heart to GRM, serving in Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Ukraine. Alongside Derek Coleman, Pete helped build a team that goes where it’s hard and stays until it’s done.

This week, we remember Pete and Derek and what they taught us:
Do the work. Care for it. Keep showing up.

A Tale of Two Kyivs:

It was 2 degrees Fahrenheit this morning in Kyiv. Outside the train window, Ukraine is a winter wonderland—snow-blanketed and "achingly" beautiful. But this beauty hides a brutal reality: Winter has been weaponized.

Systematic attacks on energy infrastructure mean that for millions, winter isn’t just a season—it’s a struggle for survival. While my team was grateful for the warmth of a hotel with generators, we were acutely aware of the thousands huddling in "resilience tents" just to charge a phone.

Why We Were There: Building Sustainable Change

We weren’t in Kyiv just to observe; we were there to build capacity that lasts long after the snow melts:

Surgical Training: We finalized our standardized trauma training program. Launching at the end of Q1, this "train-the-trainer" model ensures Ukrainian surgeons are equipped to empower their own.

Brain Health Hub: Under the leadership of , we signed a formal agreement with the Ministry of Internal Affairs to establish U-INSPIRE—Ukraine’s first national hub for TBI treatment. This includes fellowship exchanges between US and Ukrainian specialists.

Endurance. Resilience. Defiance.

Even under fire and in record-shattering cold, the kindness of the Ukrainian people is unshakable—from the "Menu without Light" borscht that warmed us, to the partners holding the line every day.

We work in emergency response and healthcare strengthening simultaneously, not sequentially. Because that’s what partners do.
