🇺🇦Below we publish Iryna's story on how the russian invasion of Ukraine has affected her career:
“Just over a month ago, I was an ordinary student at a Ukrainian university, stepping over many difficulties every day, but going towards my goals of moving abroad, communicating in English, studying, and working in the field of international law. I have been developing in these directions, taking part in Moot Courts, taking a lot of courses, training, and law schools, knowing that one day I would be able to defend human rights on the international level and be engaged in diplomacy and the international law-making process. I have dreamed to work in the sphere of public international law, some international judicial institution, or the UN.
I had hoped to take my first conscious step into this field through an internship at the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the spring, but unfortunately, that was not the case, war came into my house. It pushed me to flee abroad, although it was not how I had imagined it in peacetime. Now I realize that all the obstacles I have overcome throughout my life are just dust, as there is nothing more terrifying than losing my life and my future. I now have no doubts about my purpose, I am completely sure that I have always been interested in humanitarian law, international criminal law, and human rights law for a reason.
I would like to believe that thanks to international law and diplomacy, peace can be ensured, those who need it can be protected, and such a world system can be built in which there is no place for war and crimes against humanity, in which guilty will be punished.
I feel even more responsible for my future, and the goal to defend human rights is justified by more than just curiosity. This dream is imbued with pain. It is unequivocally my mission.
I want to invest in my future by getting new knowledge, acquaintances, skills, and financial opportunities. As a student of international law, I truly understand, how important is to join the international community, and carry out the international exchange, because it is a way to success. I want to achieve my goals in spite of all obstacles on my way.”
