Yom Kippur, or the Day of Atonement, is one of the most important dates in the Jewish calendar. According to tradition, the Almighty writes people's names in the Book of Life on Rosh Hashanah, and on Yom Kippur, this decision is officially sealed. That is why the main greeting during these days is "Gmar Chatima Tova" — wishing you a good final seal in the Book of Life.
On Yom Kippur, people observe a strict 25-hour fast, completely giving up food, water, physical work, and wearing leather shoes. Most of the time is dedicated to praying together in synagogues.
In Israel, Yom Kippur brings everything to a stop: airports, railways, public transport, and private cars do not operate, except for emergency services. Businesses, shops, and borders are closed, and television and radio go silent. The empty highways and city streets fill with pedestrians and children on bicycles, turning the country into a place of complete peace and quiet.
JNF-KKL in Ukraine warmly greets the Jewish community and wishes everyone peace, harmony, and a good inscription in the Book of Life! Gmar Chatima Tova!
