Frontline animal rescue, care, and shelter in Ukraine. Adoption across Europe.

Today is Defenders Day in Ukraine.

Even at the hardest moments on the front line, Ukrainian soldiers don’t walk past an animal in trouble. Dogs and cats, cows, storks, hedgehogs: they save them all, because every day they see how fragile life is.

The war is destroying our nature too. Forests are mined and burned, and countless animals have been killed.

Protecting life is what true honour looks like. Thank you to everyone who protects, helps, and makes room for one more life.

We see you. We remember. We are grateful. 🇺🇦

Adoption is the beginning of a beautiful adventure.
A story written side by side.
Lessons learned. Trust earned.
A story that grows richer with every page.
Imagine being a hero every time you come home.

If you are considering a pet, please consider adoption.
Be their hero.

In this final piece with Rihanna, a volunteer from Great Britain, she reflects on the joy of working alongside the team at Animal Rescue Kharkiv.

Even without a shared language, connection comes easily. With the cats, that connection needs no translation: affection, company, and someone willing to sit with them and give them a little love.
Sometimes volunteering really can be that simple.

We hope Rihanna’s story inspires you to volunteer with ARK, or find a place where you can make a difference, wherever you are in the world.

Help us give the cats at Little Prince the love and care, and the medical care they deserve.

Spending time helping animals is one of the best ways to spend a summer day!

Painting dog houses, walking dogs, being covered in kisses, and having the best time with some very special animals at Animal Rescue Kharkiv Peace Sanctuary.

For these dogs, the attention really matters. Many came from frontline communities, where explosions and fear were part of everyday life. A walk, a scratch behind the ears, or a little time with someone who cares is part of finding their way back.

And who knows? You might come to spend an afternoon with a dog and leave having met your new best friend.

Make sure to follow us as we announce more ways you can get involved and help the animals of Animal Rescue Kharkiv.

People often ask where their support goes.

This video shows the full cycle of care, from frontline rescue and emergency aid to medical treatment, rehabilitation, and rehoming.

It is a continuous process, built around animals and sustained by people who choose to help.

To help us continue this cycle of rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming.

Druzhkivka. The sound of glide bombs and artillery is crushing. Pictures and words will never be able to convey what it looks like. What it feels like. The smell of explosives. The burning hulks of cars and UGVs.

And still, people live in shattered homes. Buy food at backyard markets. Offer us fruit when we pick up a dog or cat. Smile and shake my hand.

There is nothing that humbles me like being in Donbas.

1,796 animals rescued in just three months.

This summer, the need for evacuations continued to grow as the war reached more towns and villages.

In June, 568 animals were rescued, primarily from Druzhkivka. In July, another 648 were evacuated, sometimes alongside their families. By August, we were receiving more requests from Kramatorsk and Sloviansk, with 580 more animals brought to safety.

Of those rescued in August, 297 were taken in by partner organizations and volunteers, 72 found homes in Ukraine and abroad, and 178 were reunited with their families.

1,796 animals were given a second chance.

None of this happens without the people who stand behind us. Thank you to PETA Deutschland for helping us rescue animals affected by the war.

Make a donation today and become part of the next rescue.

We’re returning to our wonderful conversation with volunteer Rihanna, who came from England to Ukraine to help.

When Rihanna began looking for places to volunteer, she researched Animal Rescue Kharkiv and discovered the work our team is doing to rescue animals from frontline communities.

What she found when she arrived was much more than rescue. It was people working every day to help animals recover from everything they’ve been through, rebuild their trust, and eventually find their way to new homes.

As Rihanna says, these animals have been through trauma, just like people have. They deserve the chance to heal.

If you’d like to volunteer and help the cats in our care heal please send us a DM.

ARK NEEDED CAGES AND CARRIERS FOR THE ANIMALS YESTERDAY.

And that is not an exaggeration. For the second week in a row, ARK has been evacuating animals every day. In the last 13 days alone, we have evacuated 270 animals from frontline areas.

As of today, we still have 195 evacuation requests. And one request does not always mean one animal. It can be 3, 5, 10 or more dogs and cats.

While animals keep arriving every day, others are already waiting to be evacuated.

That is why, right now, we critically need:
— cages for housing the animals
— carriers
— transport crates
— vaccines for cats
— bowls for dogs
— pet beds

Can you provide any of these? Comment “I CAN HELP” below, and we will contact you directly.
If you cannot provide the equipment, please donate toward purchasing it, with the note “for crates.”

Right now, even one cage or carrier is real support for ARK’s daily evacuation work.
