Bats Ukraine
(Nyctalus noctula).
Three years of bat research in Slobozhanskyi National Nature Park! 🦇
For the third year in a row, Bats Ukraine, together with Slobozhanskyi National Nature Park, has been studying bat populations within the park and its surrounding areas.
Long-term bat monitoring is essential for effective conservation. To protect bats, we first need to understand which species live in a particular area, where they roost, breed, hibernate, and which migration routes they use. This information helps us assess population health, detect potential threats early, and develop effective conservation strategies.
During previous field seasons in the Nataliivskyi Landscape Park, we discovered maternity colonies of the soprano pipistrelle (Pipistrellus pygmaeus) and the serotine bat (Cnephaeus serotinus), and confirmed breeding populations of Leisler's bat (Nyctalus leisleri) and the common noctule (Nyctalus noctula).
This year, while surveying an abandoned 19th-century hospital building that once served the Kharytonenko sugar factory, we found maternity colonies of three bat species. Among them was the brown long-eared bat (Plecotus auritus), whose breeding sites were previously unknown to us. Once again, this highlights the vital importance of historic buildings as bat roosts.
So far, we have confirmed breeding populations of eight bat species in and around the park, while two additional species have been recorded during migration.
Today, Slobozhanskyi National Nature Park is the only national park in the Kharkiv region that remains accessible for scientific fieldwork. This makes continued monitoring and conservation of its bat populations especially important.
We sincerely thank the administration and staff of Slobozhanskyi National Nature Park for their invaluable support and assistance throughout our research.
And, of course, our deepest gratitude goes to the Armed Forces of Ukraine for making it possible to continue studying and protecting our country's wildlife, even in these challenging times. 🇺🇦
