Meet Remigius Damas — the newest member of the Bahari Yetu field team. 🌊

This is what marine conservation looks like on the ground in Fumba.

We’re getting out of the office and into the ecosystem — talking directly with fishermen, looking at what is happening along the coast, documenting seaweed and algae, and listening to the people whose livelihoods depend on this water.

The question is simple:

What is happening to the sea — and what is it costing the people who depend on it?

Sedimentation. Changing fishing grounds. Seaweed production. Fish catches. Access to the ecosystem.

We’re recording it, measuring it and building the evidence with the community.

No complicated promises.

Just people, data and the ocean.

WE WENT LOOKING FOR SEDIMENT. 🌊

And this time, we documented it in the field.

At Fumba, Zanzibar, we are tracking sedimentation across the seagrass ecosystem using repeat observations and fixed monitoring locations.

Why does it matter? Suspended and deposited sediment can change water clarity and the amount of light reaching seagrass — directly affecting the conditions in which these plants photosynthesise.

We are not guessing. We are measuring what is actually happening, where it is happening, and how it changes over time.

Evidence first. Then intervention.

Low tide reveals a completely different world.

Across the intertidal flats of Fumba, Zanzibar, seagrass, algae, invertebrates and people all share the same shallow marine landscape.

This is the ecosystem we work in — and the reason we believe marine protection has to start with understanding what is actually there.

Sedimentation? And the Fumba Seaweed Ladies? 🌊

We’re looking at what is happening in the shallow-water ecosystem around Fumba — and how changes in sedimentation may affect the people whose livelihoods depend on the sea.

Bahari Yetu is working with the Fumba community to collect field evidence, talk directly with fishers and seaweed farmers, and understand what is actually happening in the water.

No assumptions. No blame. Just getting out there, measuring, and listening.

🌊 Bahari Yetu is looking for a Community Engagement Officer.

We need a Zanzibar resident, fluent in Swahili, with a Marine Science degree and a strong swimmer.

The role is about working directly with the Fumba community — explaining marine science in simple terms, listening to local concerns and helping us understand what is happening to our seagrass, coral and seaweed ecosystems.
