Today, we delivered the new educational material that completes the Safe Walks training process: the storybook “Rama takes a risk by the skin of his teeth”, available in Swahili and English.

The first schools to receive it were Sta. Monica, Fat-hi International Community School, Nelken School, and Mluka Bin Alwi Islamic School.

Through the story of Ali and Rama, two friends who experience a few close calls on the road, children learn why respecting road safety rules matters, for their own well-being and for the whole community. Fun, accessible, and educational, this story helps reinforce key lessons beyond the classroom.

In 2025, thanks to the support of IDOM, 590 copies were produced in both languages. The story was written and generously donated by renowned Tanzanian writer and educator Richard Mabala, with design and layout donated by Oscar Morales Maroto.

🌱 A sustainable step forward: even when Kukua is not physically present in schools, Rama and Salama will continue promoting safe walking habits through school libraries.
More schools will receive their copies in the coming weeks.

Hoy hemos entregado el nuevo material didáctico que cierra la formación del programa Safe Walks: el cuento “Rama takes a risk by the skin of his teeth”, disponible en suajili e inglés.

A través de la historia de Ali y Rama, dos amigos que viven algunos sustos en la carretera, niñas y niños aprenden la importancia de respetar las normas de seguridad vial para su bienestar y el de toda la comunidad. Un recurso cercano, divertido y educativo que refuerza el aprendizaje más allá del aula.

En 2025, gracias al apoyo de IDOM, se produjeron 590 ejemplares en ambos idiomas. El cuento fue escrito y donado por el reconocido escritor y educador tanzano Richard Mabala, diseñado y maquetado por Oscar Morales Maroto, e ilustrado por Gonzalo Martín Pierto.

🌱 Un paso hacia la sostenibilidad: aunque Kukua no esté presente físicamente en las aulas, Rama y Salama seguirán promoviendo hábitos de movilidad segura desde las bibliotecas escolares.

Highlights from the Children March 2025! 🚦🚸🇹🇿

A milestone for Kukua and for Zanzibar: an inspiring mobilisation where children, families, and allies came together to demand safer streets for every child.

This event not only raises visibility around an urgent issue (child road safety) but also strengthens dialogue and joint action among public and private actors committed to transforming our urban environments.

We extend our deepest appreciation to IDOM and the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications & Transport of Zanzibar for their commitment, collaboration, and support in making this initiative possible.

Together, we continue moving towards safer, more inclusive, and more sustainable urban environments for all.

Un hito para Kukua y para Zanzibar: una movilización inspiradora en la que niñas, niños, familias y aliados se unieron para exigir calles más seguras para la infancia.

Este evento no solo visibiliza una causa urgente (la seguridad vial infantil), sino que también impulsa el diálogo y la acción conjunta entre actores públicos y privados comprometidos con la transformación territorial.

When we walk together, our impact multiplies.

The voices of children, communities and schools are essential to making the daily realities of road safety visible. And when these realities connect with committed institutions and strong political will, joint efforts emerge that can drive lasting change.

At Kukua, we believe road safety is built through collaboration:
between the citizens who live these challenges, the organisations that support the process, and the public and private institutions capable of transforming evidence into sustainable solutions.

That is why, beyond raising awareness, our actions aim to strengthen long-term political commitment, create ongoing spaces for dialogue, and directly engage those who have the capacity to implement real improvements for our children.

We are deeply grateful for the support of IDOM, whose commitment made this event possible, and for the active participation of the Ministry of Communication, Infrastructure and Transport, which continues to demonstrate leadership and openness in advancing safer streets.

Only by working together (communities, the public sector and the private sector) can we build environments where every child can walk, learn and grow safely.

Cuando caminamos juntos, el impacto se multiplica.

Las voces de los niños, de las comunidades y de las escuelas son fundamentales para visibilizar la realidad diaria de la seguridad vial. Y cuando estas realidades se encuentran con instituciones comprometidas y con voluntad política, se articulan esfuerzos capaces de impulsar cambios duraderos.

En Kukua creemos que la seguridad vial se construye desde la colaboración:
Entre la ciudadanía que enfrenta los desafíos, las organizaciones que acompañan el proceso y las instituciones públicas y privadas que pueden transformar esa evidencia en soluciones sostenibles.

Por eso, más allá de sensibilizar, nuestras acciones buscan fortalecer el compromiso político a largo plazo, generar espacios de diálogo constante e involucrar directamente a quienes tienen la capacidad de implementar mejoras reales para nuestros niños.

This Monday, we marched for road safety!

More than 200 children, together with community leaders, government officers, shehas and partners, walked with determination along Creek Road to raise their voices for a basic right: the right to walk safely.
In commemoration of the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, we organised this march to honour the victims, raise awareness about road risks, and call for safer streets.
Throughout the day, the children became Traffic Police for a moment, acted out unsafe situations they have experienced in the past, and shared personal stories related to road insecurity. In addition, the MoICT strengthened its commitment to the cause by painting a zebra path together with the community.
This event was made possible thanks to a joint effort between the Ministry of Communication, Infrastructure and Transport, IDOM, Kukua, and the dedication of four local schools that, over the past two years, have been trained through the Safe Walks programme.
Thank you to the schools, teachers, families and communities who walked with us, and to IDOM for making the materialisation and logistics of this event possible.
💛 Together, we can build a future without road deaths.

¡Este lunes, marchamos por la seguridad vial!
Más de 200 niños y niñas, junto a líderes comunitarios, agentes del Gobierno, shehas y aliados, caminaron con fuerza por Creek Road para alzar la voz por un derecho básico: ¡poder caminar seguros!
En conmemoración del World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, realizamos esta marcha para honrar a las víctimas, sensibilizar sobre los riesgos viales y exigir calles más seguras.
Durante la jornada, los niños y niñas se convirtieron en Traffic Police por un día, interpretaron situaciones inseguras que han vivido en el pasado y compartieron historias personales relacionadas con la inseguridad vial. Además, el MoICT reforzó su compromiso con la causa pintando un paso de cebra.
Este evento fue posible gracias a un esfuerzo conjunto entre el Ministerio de Comunicación, Infraestructura y Transporte, IDOM, Kukua, y la voluntad y compromiso de 4 escuelas locales que, durante los últimos dos años, han recibido formación a través de Safe Walks.
Gracias a las escuelas, docentes, familias y comunidades que caminaron con nosotros, y a IDOM por hacer posible la materialización de este evento y su logística.

CHILDREN MARCH FOR ROAD SAFETY 🚦🦺

Traffic accidents are the leading cause of death among children and young people aged 5 to 29. Every day, 600 children die in traffic crashes (that’s one every 2 minutes).

In commemoration of the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, Kukua, with the support of IDOM and the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communication and Transport of Zanzibar, is organising a powerful community event to raise awareness about the importance of road safety, especially for our most vulnerable: children.

CAMINATA INFANTIL POR LA SEGURIDAD VIAL 🚦🦺

Los accidentes de tráfico son la principal causa de muerte entre niños, niñas y jóvenes de 5 a 29 años. Cada día, 600 niños pierden la vida en accidentes de tránsito (uno cada 2 minutos).

En el marco del Día Mundial en Recuerdo de las Víctimas de Siniestros de Tráfico, Kukua, con el apoyo de IDOM y el Ministerio de Infraestructura, Comunicación y Transporte de Zanzíbar, organiza el evento “Children March for Road Safety” para crear conciencia sobre la importancia de la seguridad vial, con un enfoque especial en proteger a la niñez como usuaria vulnerable del espacio público.

Co-creating Zanzibar’s Future: People-Centred Engagement for Sustainable Transport

Since February 2024, we have been leading a Stakeholder Engagement Plan as part of the ‘Study of the Reorganisation and Electrification of the Public Transport System in Zanzibar’, a project supported by the Spanish State Secretariat of Commerce, led by in partnership with the Government of Zanzibar.

Over the course of more than a year, we engaged with +400 participants across diverse stakeholder groups, including transport representatives, government agencies, shehas, women, children, people with special needs, and other vulnerable community members.

By designing culturally tailored and context-sensitive activities adapted to diverse audiences, we enabled participants to share their daily experiences, concerns, and aspirations, which directly informed the Study’s final proposals.

Kukua is committed to going beyond consultation: our engagement methodology embraces people-centred co-creation, ensuring that decisions genuinely reflect the voices and realities of those most affected by them.
We are grateful to the Government of Zanzibar for its commitment to placing people at the centre of its decisions, and to IDOM for setting an example of responsible and context-sensitive innovation, one that advances infrastructure while integrating the lived realities of the communities it serves.

This week, we had the privilege of hosting a very special field visit with the team from who led Chair on Hotel Social Responsibility.

We discussed our Safe Kids program and the crucial importance of preventing child violence in Zanzibar, while also reflecting on the structural causes that sustain this reality.

The exchange of knowledge and experiences between academia, the private sector, and social organisations is essential to strengthen programs that not only address urgent needs but also generate sustainable, long-term change.

Many thanks to RIU Hotels & Resorts and ESCP Business School for demonstrating that social responsibility is most impactful when it creates lasting change for children and the communities they grow up in.

Esta semana tuvimos una visita muy especial a terreno junto al equipo de ESCP Business School, a cargo de la cátedra de RIU Hotels & Resorts sobre responsabilidad social hotelera.

El intercambio de aprendizajes y experiencias entre la academia, el sector privado y las organizaciones sociales es esencial para fortalecer programas que no solo respondan a necesidades urgentes, sino que también generen cambios sostenibles en el tiempo.

Gracias a RIU Hotels & Resorts y a ESCP Business School por demostrar que la responsabilidad social, cuando se ejerce con coherencia, es muestra de un compromiso profundo con la niñez y con el futuro de las comunidades.

Safe Kids milestone in Zanzibar ✨🇹🇿🎓

Last week, for the first time, 81 primary school teachers completed training under the Safe Kids program.
Over the course of 9 intensive sessions in partnership with the Ministry of Education, we transformed months of coordination and agreements into action.

This achievement is a powerful step forward for child protection in Zanzibar, laying the groundwork for expanding the program to many more educators.

We are grateful to the Ministry of Education of Zanzibar for their collaboration and to for making the continuation of this program possible.

Un hito para Safe Kids en Zanzíbar ✨🇹🇿🎓

La semana pasada, por primera vez, 81 profesores de primaria completaron su capacitación dentro del programa Safe Kids.
A lo largo de 9 sesiones intensivas, y en alianza con el Ministerio de Educación, convertimos meses de coordinación y acuerdos en resultados concretos.
