Yesterday we had a wonderful day, celebrating the graduation of our Conservation Club students! It’s been an amazing year for Conservation Club, with loads of students, learning and laughter. So many students have shown up to class regularly this year (with an average attendance of 34/lesson), that we had 35 students graduating. For graduation we were also joined by some of last years’ students, and it was great seeing some old familiar faces.
The day was filled with games, balloons and cake, followed by the handing out of certificates. We also had some speeches, and the students had even written their own speech to us, that one of the students presented on behalf of the whole group. It was such a rewarding day, and a beautiful end to this school year! ❤️📚☀️

Check out this amazing sighting we had yesterday: we had been very quietly observing a group of dolphins from afar, when the animals got so comfortable and relaxed that we had the chance to capture them being extremely playful, performing jumps after jumps!
What a treat for us!

🔉New Volunteer Alert!🔉

Alicia, from Ecuador, joined the Marine Team this week after spending three weeks with us as a teaching volunteer. Now she’s diving—both literally and figuratively—into the underwater world by helping us monitor dolphin behavior, fish market activity, and coral reef developments. Every morning this week, we’ve been heading out to collect valuable data that helps us better understand the impact of human activity on marine life.

Welcome to the team, Alicia, and thank you for doing your part to keep our oceans alive!🪸🐋🐬🐠

🔉 New Volunteers! 🔉
After a week without volunteer support for our staff—which gave us time to catch up on office work and boat driver course materials—we’re very excited to welcome Olivia and Harriet to the Marine team!

They previously spent two weeks with us as Teaching volunteers before joining Marine. Now, after being introduced to the Dolphin Conservation project, they’re ready to gain plenty of hands-on experience both on the boat and on shore.

Last week we finished our last lesson for the Ethical Boat Driver and Guide training! We’ve had 6 sessions, covering the topics of Environmental Education (including dolphins, sea turtles, coral reefs and marine pollution), Ethical and Safe Driving, Ethical Dolphin Swim and Interaction, and Better Business and Customer Service. The attendance has been great, and we’ve had such a fun time teaching and discussing more sustainable tourism practices. 🐬💙🐠🐢🪸

Busy season is slowing down a little, and we’ve noticed the number of boats gradually decreasing over the past two weeks. The same goes for our volunteer team: we waved goodbye to many last week. From a peak of eight volunteers, our team now consists only of our staff and our two dedicated Italians, Rebecca and Antonio.

The remaining team members, however, had a very exciting start to their week. After spending the day out on the boats for dolphin monitoring and enjoying a rewarding lunch at Pungume Island, we got extremely lucky and spotted some humpback dolphins on monday! We rounded of the day with fish market monitoring (lots of rays this time), and then headed back home. 🪸

🐬🔉New volunteer, and also new run of our training workshop for boat drivers and tour operations on ethical dolphin tours and practices🔉🐬!

Welcome to the team, Antonio from Italy!
Antonio joined us just in time for our final prep session with the volunteers and teachers, as well as the very first lesson of our five-module course. The team has been busy revising and practicing to ensure the lessons are delivered smoothly. Both the team and the new students had a great start—getting to know one another and sharing their baseline knowledge.
We’re excited for the upcoming lessons and for fostering a more ethical approach in the next generation of boat drivers!💪

In Zanzibar, magic unfolds when respect for nature leads the way. 🌍✨
During a dolphins monitoring session, we experienced a truly delicate and unforgettable moment where three of our volunteers had the chance to swim alongside wild dolphins, curious, playful, and completely free. 🐬💙

Finally we had a monitoring session without any other boats around. Guided by our very skilled boat driver Nassor, part of Zanzibar Ethical Tours, we got to have a swim with the dolphins in an ethical way. This was not just an adventure, but an example of how amazing these experiences can be when done in the right way.

Choose to travel with purpose, because unforgettable memories are even better when they make a positive impact.

New Volunteer 🐬🐟🪸

A very warm welcome to our new volunteer, Loukia from Cyprus 🇨🇾! She will be supporting us over the next two weeks and has already had her first hands-on experience with the project. This morning, the Marine Conservation Team spotted dolphins and, as usual, recorded their behaviour around the tourist boats, followed by a trip to Pungume island for coral reef monitoring and lunch. Afterwards, we visited the fish market to monitor the species and quantities sold today.

We are excited to work together over the next two weeks!

This week began with a busy dolphin monitoring session for our team: we spotted 25 boats bringing tourists to see the dolphins off the coast of Kizimkazi. Although this number was lower than the previous week, we still witnessed the impact that such traffic, and especially the rough driving of the boats, has on the dolphins.
Later, we joined the hustle and bustle of the fish market, where fishermen were selling a mix of small reef fish and larger catches, most of which were destined for local hotels. 🐠🐟

🌊 Dolphin & Marine Conservation – Weekly Update 🐬

This week has been an incredible journey for our volunteer team here in Zanzibar!

We spent time out at sea monitoring dolphins – not just observing them, but also paying close attention to tourist behavior and how local boat drivers interact with these amazing animals. One of the highlights was spotting Humpback dolphins – a shy and rare species that made the moment even more special. 💙

Our work didn’t stop there. We visited the local fish market to collect important data and were unfortunate to witness giant rays weighing up to 100 kg! 🐋

Back on land, we engaged with the community by delivering an educational session to a class of students about proper waste disposal and the importance of protecting our marine environment. To make it even more memorable, we organized an interactive activity day filled with learning and fun.

Every week reminds us that conservation is not only about protecting wildlife – it’s also about inspiring people to be part of the change. 🌍💚
