Supporting Children, Schools, and Vulnerable Communities in Zanzibar
Overview
During a two‑week emergency intervention coordinated on the ground in Zanzibar, volunteers and donors raised approximately USD 10,000 to support local schools and vulnerable children. What began as a plan to help 150 pupils expanded to reach roughly 400 children across four schools: Golden Dream School (Fuoni), Stone Town Eco School, True Vision School, and Tumaini School (Chukwani).
Key achievements
- Educational supplies for ~400 pupils: personal minibags containing exercise books, pens, colored pencils, mathematical sets, erasers, highlighters, sharpeners, etc.
- School equipment: whiteboards for each school, two printers (Stone Town Eco, Tumaini), six sports balls and 2 pumps.
- Fees covered: school fees for children at Stone Town Eco School unable to pay (covered through April).
- Orphan support at Stone Town Eco School: four months of meals, additional food supplies, new bunk beds, mattresses, pillows and bed sheets, and hygiene kits (soap, washing powder, toothbrushes, toothpaste, toilet supplies, waste bins).
- Water, sanitation & infrastructure: repaired water system, new sinks, protected well covers, new sanitary facilities, upgraded electricity supply at Stone Town Eco School, and new waste disposal points at Tumaini and Stone Town Eco.
- School stability: four months’ rent paid for Stone Town Eco School to prevent displacement.
Impact snapshot
- Children reached: ~400
- Schools supported: 4
- Funds raised: ~USD 10,000
- Major outcomes: improved learning materials, safer sanitation and water access, better sleeping conditions for orphans, continuity of schooling, and strengthened school infrastructure.
