UPENDO DEAF CENTER opened its doors in 2005 to meet the need for deaf children and youth to an education ( in preparing special education literally and special curriculum for our deaf children) life skills, sports, discipline,
self-empowerment, entrepreneurship, handcraft and life in general. For a long time disability in Zanzibar Isles linked with witchcraft, myths, and mistaken belief. It resulted in stigma and discrimination toward people with disabilities including their families. Hence, many children with disabilities were not taken to school, as they were considered worthless and a trouble to the family. Deaf education faces many challenges in Zanzibar, making it more difficult to offer quality education to deaf children. Zanzibar has shifted from a special education system to an inclusive education system, however it has not been effective and sustainable for deaf children according to their environment. In implementing, Upendo is ensuring that deaf children receive a quality and sustainable education based on their language (Sign language) as communication language. Currently there is a lack of involvement and participation in the vital institutions due to communication breakdown because of deafness and inaccessibility of the physical environment for those with physical disabilities. Difficulty in accessing information, specialists and assist devices such as wheelchairs, tricycles, hearing aids and sunscreens needed by the various disabilities. This restricted the interaction with other community members hence worsened the stigma and discrimination related to disability. There is a lack of disability specific programs like life skills and other capacities necessary for them to lead a quality life in the future. There is a great need to initiate income generating activities through revolving funds to improve their lives. In some communities, children with disabilities were denied food or left to die on the streets. Children with minor disabilities could not be corrected because the families feared exposing their disabled children. UPENDO has established the center to sensitize parents and unite children with disabilities to recognized their abilities and talents . There are children who still need rehabilitation through corrective surgery and hearing aids. UPENDO has initiated the program on life skills in the center that cater for children with different disabilities. Today these kids have complete freedom as they have learnt to interact with fellow students. The center builds confidence and self-esteem to disable people, the role of Upendo as day center is to empower kids and youth especially with deafness towards self reliant. The center has empowered people with disabilities through involving them in decision-making, and capacity building. UPENDO teaches deaf and other disable people to do handcrafts like sewing, weaving etc for their future self employment opportunity. Our center depends on the generosity of donors, parents donation, partnership and volunteers to achieve our goals. There are different ways of supporting our center, please ! support our center.
