🌊 Happy World Fisheries Day! 🌊

Today we celebrate the communities that keeps our oceans alive and our plates full, while reminding ourselves of the urgent need for sustainable fishing practices.

At our vision is a world where marine ecosystems are valued and managed sustainably. Yet, more than one-third of marine species are at risk of extinction. Overfishing remains the greatest threat, with 90% of threatened species impacted by fishing alone.

Despite progress in global fisheries management, incidental capture(bycatch) continues to endanger countless species. is both a call to action and a reminder of what’s possible.

By strengthening sustainable fisheries and reducing fishing mortality, we can secure a more resilient futureβ€”for marine life, ecosystems, and the communities that depend on them.

🌍 Together, let’s protect our oceans and ensure they thrive for generations to come πŸ’™πŸŒŠπŸŒπŸŽ£πŸŽ

Look closely at this house – now, imagine it is yours.
This is your home in Simbaulanga, a place nestled in the beautiful, but fragile, Rufiji Delta. The walls are woven from natural fibers, the roof thatched to perfection, and the floor stands on stilts above the high tide mark. It’s a haven built with generations of wisdom, perfectly suited to the rhythm of the ocean.
But lately, the rhythm has changed.
When you look at this picture, can you honestly say you feel safe? With every passing year, the seas rise a little higher, the storms hit a little harder, and the land beneath your feet seems to slip away just a little bit faster. The very elements that give life here now threaten to take it all away.
It is easy to look away, but this vulnerability is real. It is a daily reality for millions.
We must act. We must take action to restore our coastlines, protect our natural buffers, and advocate for global change. This story is not just theirs; it is a shared chapter we can rewrite, together.

πŸ¦ˆπŸ’™πŸŒŠπŸŒŠTIME TO PROTECT OUR OCEAN GUARDIANS 🌊
More than one-third of all shark and ray species are at risk of extinction β€” in our lifetime. These incredible creatures aren’t just beautiful; they’re essential to healthy oceans, balanced ecosystems, and resilient coastal livelihoods.

From November 24th to Dec 5th 2025, global leaders will gather at CITES CoP20 in Uzbekistan to decide the fate of species like whale sharks, manta rays, oceanic whitetips etc β€” all critically endangered, all vital to our planet’s future.

This is our moment to speak up.
ZOAFO stand with and ocean defenders worldwide to urge decision-makers to on every shark and ray protection proposal.

🌊 World Sawfish Day πŸ’™πŸ¦ˆ

Today we ZOAFO join the world in marking World Sawfish Day β€” raising awareness for one of the ocean’s most unique and critically endangered species.

Once common in Tanzania and Zanzibar, sawfish are now rarely seen due to overfishing, habitat loss, and illegal trade of their parts.

πŸ“‰ IUCN Status:

Largetooth Sawfish – Critically Endangered

Green, Narrow & Dwarf Sawfish – Endangered
🚫 All protected under CITES Appendix I

πŸ’™ Let’s protect sawfish, our ocean, and our future.

🌿 Empowering Women and Youth through Nature-based Solutions (NbS)! 🌊

We’re thrilled to share that one of our members from Zan Ocean and Agroforest Organization (ZOAFO) participated in the Nature-based Solutions (NbS) Training for Climate Adaptation.

As a youth-led organization, this experience perfectly aligns with our mission to empower women and youth in driving climate action, ecosystem restoration, and sustainable livelihoods within our coastal communities. πŸ’ͺ🌱

The skills and insights gained from this training will help strengthen our work in inclusive NbS implementation, mangrove restoration, and community-led adaptation, ensuring that no one is left behind in building climate resilience. πŸŒπŸ’š

We extend our sincere appreciation to the organizers for this empowering initiative and for creating a platform where young voices can lead in shaping the future of our environment.

🌊 Plastic pollution is a serious threat to our oceans. Did you know 73% of marine litter worldwide is plastic? Bottles, bags, and wrappers harm marine life, local communities, and the beauty of our coasts.

This October, we are launching an Ocean Literacy Campaign to raise awareness and inspire action. Let’s unite, spread knowledge, and create a future where plastic pollution is no longer a threat. πŸ’™πŸŒ
