Protecting Freedom of Religion or Belief in Tanzania

For the past two days, representatives of the Joint Committee of Religious Leaders for Peace in Zanzibar have discussed the status of freedom of religion or belief (FoRB) in Tanzania.

Many more discussions to come - including next week on Mainland. And the findings will contribute to the civil society shadow report ahead of Tanzania’s upcoming review under the United Nations Human Rights Council’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR).

The process of coordinating the broader civil society shadow report is led by our deeply valued partner, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania. We are grateful to have been invited to support the work on the FoRB section, where Danmission together with Tanzanian partners contributes with specific experience and competence on freedom of religion or belief.

Protecting FoRB is essential for peaceful and inclusive societies. When people are able to live and practice their beliefs freely and safely, communities can thrive in dignity and mutual respect.

We thank our partners for their commitment and engagement in this important process, working together to safeguard the dignity, rights, and peaceful coexistence of the communities we all serve.

So meaningful to welcome back Danmission’s very first representative to Zanzibar. (Below pictured together with current Director Signe Atim Allimadi and our peace and democracy program manager Pastor Paul Mdumi).

In 2002, at the request of our partner the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania, Pastor Arngeir Langås and his wife arrived with a clear mandate: to support peaceful and harmonious interreligious relations across the islands.

He did not start from scratch. He built on existing relationships and worked closely with key religious leaders and stakeholders. It was a joint effort from the very beginning. Locally owned and collectively shaped.

From that shared commitment emerged important institutions that still serve Zanzibar today:
• Joint Committee of Religious Leaders for Peace in Zanzibar (est. 2005)
• Zanzibar Interfaith Centre (ZANZIC), now a respected hub for interfaith peace dialogue expertise

It was inspiring to reflect together on the struggles, achievements, and lessons these platforms offer — also for peacebuilding support on the Mainland.

Thank you, Arngeir, for extending your official visit privately to reconnect with old friends.

From our Regional Director Signe Atim Allimadi:
One week in Bukoba and Karagwe in the Kagera Region and my heart is full.

Being in Tanzania is never just work for me. This is the country that welcomed my parents when they fled Uganda. It is where I was born. Walking through villages, sitting under trees in conversation, listening to youth church choirs rehearse. It all feels both deeply familiar and profoundly meaningful.

This week I spent time with our partners in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania Elct/nwd Bukoba and ELCT Karagwe diocese. I spent time with church leaders, with dedicated staff, and with young people who carry such clarity about their faith and strong hopes for their future.

I visited health services supported by the Church. I met community members strengthening their livelihoods. I visited a church owned agricultural institute that teaches local farmers climate-smart agriculture. I walked through areas where forests are being protected and restored.

And again I was reminded: the Church is not just a building. It is a living presence in people’s lives.

In moments of need, it responds.
In times of uncertainty, it accompanies.
In the face of climate change, it teaches, mobilises and protects Creation. And as Danmission, we are proud to walk alongside.

What moved me most was the youth. Their courage to speak, their commitment to serve, their hope for their communities.

Partnership, when it is built on trust and respect, becomes something powerful. Not charity. Not projects. But shared responsibility and shared vision.

I leave Kagera grateful. Grateful for the warmth, the honesty, and the reminder that faith, when lived with integrity, truly transforms lives.

“I feel deeply inspired seeing this important work from our partners at Coast Interfaith Council of Clerics Trust on the coast of Kenya.

Young people are choosing trust over mistrust and are building themselves as leaders. They are reaching across faith divides, building trust, and showing that interfaith engagement is not just dialogue — it is a powerful force for peace and a foundation for just and resilient societies.

This is exactly why Danmission East Africa prioritises partnerships like this. We believe in the leadership of young people. We believe in the power of faith actors as drivers of positive change. And we believe that locally led initiatives like this are essential to shaping peaceful futures.

We are proud to stand alongside CICC in this important work.”

It was a pleasure for our regional director Signe Allimadi and our peace and democracy manager Pastor Paul Mdumi to meet with Deputy Head of Mission Lise Abildgaard Sørensen from the Embassy of Denmark in Tanzania for thoughtful and forward-looking discussions on our shared engagement in Tanzania.

We are grateful for the longstanding support of the Danish Government to Danmission and our work alongside Tanzanian partners. Together, we are supporting locally rooted efforts that promote peaceful and inclusive societies, uphold democratic space, and protect nature and climate.

At the heart of this work are trusted partnerships, local leadership, and a shared commitment to Tanzania.
