ADRA Tanzania, in partnership with ADRA Australia, is recruiting for the Scaling Up Rural Production and Livelihoods Using Sustainable Farming Approaches (SURPLUS) Project in Mtwara Region.
🌱 SURPLUS will work to strengthen the cashew value chain and improve smallholder farmers' access to fair, reliable and sustainable markets. Through a learning-by-doing approach, the project will explore market opportunities and generate evidence to inform the development of a future cashew-focused Social Business for Impact model.

Ushirika is a farmers' group with a long history of working together. The group consists of 16 members, 13 women and 3 men, and has benefited from several components of the AGILE Project.

🐔 The group selected poultry farming as one of its livelihood activities. Members constructed a chicken coop and appointed a committed caretaker for the chicks. In return, ADRA Tanzania provided 300 chickens and poultry feed.

This shared investment reflects ADRA Tanzania's approach to sustainable development. By encouraging communities to contribute their own time, skills and resources, projects foster ownership and help ensure that the benefits continue long after project support has ended.

When children work instead of learning, they lose more than an education.

ADRA Tanzania collected information from 100 families to identify children affected by or at risk of child labour in Meserani Village, Monduli District.

The findings reveal significant barriers to education. Some children have never enrolled in school, while others started late or experienced long interruptions to their learning. Some adolescents aged 14–17 are still enrolled in Standards II and III, grades typically attended by much younger children. Even children who are enrolled continue to balance school with work. On market days, some classroom seats remain empty as children help their families at the local market instead of attending lessons.

These educational gaps are not caused by a lack of ability or motivation. They are the result of children having to work instead of learning. Poverty forces many families to make difficult choices, and every interruption to education makes it harder for children to catch up.

Through the BEACON Project, ADRA Tanzania is working with children, families, schools and community leaders to help children return to education and reduce the drivers of child labor in their communities.

As part of commemorating the Day of the African Child, ADRA Tanzania concluded a child protection and gender-based violence (GBV) awareness campaign that reached communities across Chamwino District Council and Dodoma City Council.

The campaign engaged community members through awareness activities in public spaces and schools, making child protection and GBV prevention messages accessible to children, parents, teachers, and the wider public.

The final event, held on 16th June, 2026 at Mvumi Makulu Ward, Chamwino District, brought together more than 500 community members and was graced by the Chamwino District Commissioner as the Guest of Honour, reaffirming the collective commitment to safeguarding children and preventing gender-based violence.
🎭 Through interactive theatre performances, participants explored the importance of protecting children from violence, promoting their rights, and creating safe, supportive environments where every child can thrive.

Together, we can build safer communities where every child is protected and empowered to reach their full potential.

🌱 How can communities become active drivers of their own development?

ADRA Tanzania staff, together with government officials from local government authorities, Agriculture, Community development department and Lead Farmers representatives, recently participated in a week-long Community Action Planning (CAP) training facilitated by ADRA Denmark under the AGILE Project.

The training combined theoretical sessions with practical field experience, equipping participants with tools and approaches to support communities in identifying their priorities, planning actions, and developing locally led solutions.

Through the CAP approach, community groups analyze their needs, develop action plans, and collaborate to implement initiatives that respond to local challenges and opportunities. Selected community initiatives will also receive support through the AGILE Project, helping transform community plans into tangible and sustainable improvements.

💛 INTERNATIONAL ALBINISM AWARENESS DAY

Today, we join the global community in marking International Albinism Awareness Day and celebrating the dignity and contributions of people living with albinism.

This year's theme, "Proudly in my skin — celebrating all skin tones," highlights the importance of building societies where every person is valued, respected, and able to participate fully, regardless of appearance or skin colour.

In Tanzania, where the prevalence of albinism is among the highest in the world, many people with albinism continue to face barriers that limit their opportunities and full participation in society. Yet they also demonstrate remarkable resilience in overcoming these challenges.

At ADRA Tanzania, we believe that every person deserves the opportunity to live safely and thrive.

For many years, ADRA Tanzania has worked alongside people with albinism, their families, the Tanzania Albinism Society, and local communities to promote inclusion, challenge stigma, and build greater understanding of albinism. Through awareness-raising, education support, and livelihood initiatives, we have helped create opportunities for greater independence and improved quality of life.

🟥 RED CARD TO CHILD LABOUR
Today, as the world marks the World Day Against Child Labour under the theme "Red Card to Child Labour: Fair Play for Children, Decent Work for Adults," we reaffirm that every child deserves a childhood filled with play, learning, and possibility.
Child labour remains a significant challenge in Tanzania, with more than 1 in 4 children aged 5–17 engaged in child labour. Many children face barriers to education, including poverty, household responsibilities, and cultural norms that contribute to school dropout.
At ADRA Tanzania, we believe that lasting change starts by addressing the root causes that keep children out of school. With the support of ADRA Netherlands, we are launching the BEACON of Hope Project in Monduli District. Through educational support, livelihood opportunities for families, and community awareness initiatives, the project will help out-of-school children return to learning and remain where they belong: in school.
Education opens doors to opportunities, brighter futures, and dignified lives. Together, we are building a future where every child can reach their full potential.

🇹🇿🤝🇩🇰 Working Together for Lasting Change

Earlier this year, ADRA Tanzania welcomed colleagues from ADRA Denmark as part of our long-standing collaboration aimed at improving the well-being and resilience of communities across Tanzania.
The visit provided an opportunity for joint planning, strategic discussions, and the exchange of ideas as we began laying the groundwork for the next phase of our cooperation. Alongside these conversations, the team reflected on experiences and lessons learned from current programme implementation, helping to inform future priorities and approaches.
Strong partnerships are built through continuous learning, trust, and a shared commitment to serving communities. We are grateful for the opportunity to work alongside our colleagues from ADRA Denmark and look forward to continuing this journey together.
