Himiza Social Justice Himiza Social Justice is a non-profit making organization which strives to enhance access to justice among rural and urban community members.

Himiza Social Justice has been initiated by vibrant young people with different professional backgrounds with the view of enhancing access to justice among rural and urban community members. The organization was registered on 19th May, 2014 under the Companies Act No. 12 of 2002 and issued with certificate of incorporation No. 108309 as a company limited by guarantee (non-profit making organizatio

n) with all qualifications to carry out activities of non-governmental organization. Target group and or beneficiaries of the organization:
• Children, Youth and Women.
• People with Disability.
• Poor rural communities. Reasons for choice of beneficiaries:
In a study conducted by the organization before its registration in 2014 in Geita and Busega districts, it was found out that children and youth compose a big number of the whole population of Tanzania and their directly and indirectly affected by the policy and laws that are implemented and enforced in the community. With this view they are the primary consumers and directly affected by the government’s decisions and projects implemented thereto. In this study it was also revealed that women are the most vulnerable group in socio-economic development which includes gender based violence, lack of economic opportunities, marginalization of women as a result of negative culture and inferiority complex created among women in achieving social, political and economic development. To that effect the organization saw the need to have this group as its primary beneficiaries. The organization also found out that in its study, people with disability are given less attention while they remain victims of various policies and laws which affect their rights. They are far left from involvement of things that affect their wellbeing and decisions in that manner are left in the hands of others. To have them as the primary target group will widen a chance to have them participate and involve in the decisions that affect their lives. The study further revealed that the poor rural communities lag behind many development projects which are firstly initiated in urban areas. The rural communities have few people to advocate for their rights and the projects are less directed to them for lack of active voice in advocating for projects that best suit their needs.

Today we were grateful to host some visitors from the Controller and Auditor General (CAG) under the National Audit Office (NAO) of Tanzania. The primary objective of their visit was to audit the efficacy and effectiveness of legal aid services we provide under the Legal Aid Act (2017). Our organization, Himiza Social Justice, is one of the few organizations registered as a countrywide legal aid provider in Tanzania and was picked among the few for this exercise.

We had fruitful deliberations on how to improve the provision of legal aid services to the public and the implementation of the Legal Aid Act. Likewise, as registered legal aid providers to see how paralegals registered by the Registrar of Legal Aid Providers in Tanzania discharge their duties and responsibilities within the ethical standards laid down by the law—and also looking at the better way of monitoring them not to exceed the limits of their mandate.
