🌿It's important for western midwives to learn about the local culture and is a clinical necessity. When a midwife understands why a family follows a certain tradition, they can provide care that is both medically sound and emotionally resonant. Safe birth starts with mutual respect.🌿

Meet Leah – Chair of Mamatoto 💛

Leah founded Mamatoto after visiting Tanzania, first with her church and later as a student midwife. What started as a life-changing trip quickly grew into a passion for supporting mothers, babies, and midwives across borders.

A fierce advocate and a deeply compassionate leader, Leah brings heart, humour, and a lot of determination to everything she does. She believes strongly in the power of community, kindness, and standing alongside women everywhere.

When she’s not championing Mamatoto, Leah is happiest at home with her wonderful husband, her brilliant kids, a few curious cats, and a lively flock of chickens. She loves family time, evenings laughing with friends, and—whenever possible—heading back to visit our amazing Tanzanian friends who continue to inspire the work we do.

Funny, caring, and always ready to help others… we’re very lucky to have Leah leading the Mamatoto family. 🌍

Kutana na Leah – Mwenyekiti wa Mamatoto 💛

Leah alianzisha Mamatoto baada ya kutembelea Tanzania, kwanza akiwa na kanisa lake na baadaye k**a mwanafunzi wa ukunga. Kilichoanza k**a safari iliyobadilisha maisha yake, kilikua haraka na kuwa shauku ya kusaidia akina mama, watoto wachanga, na wakunga kuvuka mipaka.

Akiwa mtetezi shupavu na kiongozi mwenye huruma ya dhati, Leah ana moyo, ucheshi, na dhamira kubwa katika kila anachofanya. Anaamini kwa dhati katika nguvu ya jamii, wema, na kusimama pamoja na wanawake kila mahali.

Anapokuwa akishughulikia masuala ya Mamatoto, Leah huwa na furaha zaidi akiwa nyumbani na mume wake wa mwema na bora sana, watoto wake wenye vipaji, paka wachache wenye udadisi, na kundi la kuku wachangamfu. Anapenda muda wa familia, jioni zenye furaha na marafiki, na—kila inapowezekana—kurudi kuwatembelea marafiki zetu wazuri wa Kitanzania ambao wanaendelea kuhamasisha kazi tunayofanya.

Mcheshi, mwenye kujali, na daima tayari kusaidia wengine… tuna bahati sana kuwa na Leah akiongoza familia ya Mamatoto 🌍

Kim serves as the Vice Chair of Mamatoto, where she brings an unmatched work ethic and a deep-seated commitment to maternal health. Kim is a tireless advocate for women from all backgrounds, believing that every mother deserves access to quality education and support, regardless of their geography or circumstances.
Her dedication is rooted in a collaborative spirit; Kim is particularly passionate about working alongside traditional birth attendants, seeking to bridge the gap between global maternal education and the invaluable wisdom of local practitioners. She believes in a two-way street of learning—bringing modern resources to the table while deeply honoring and learning from traditional practices.
Known for her "can-do" attitude, Kim thrives on tackling the charity’s most complex challenges—no task is too big or too small when it comes to furthering Mamatoto’s mission. When she isn’t advocating for women globally, Kim is a dedicated wife and mother of two, and registered midwife, roles that fuel her drive to ensure a safer, more educated world for the next generation of families.

🌿 Home births show the strength of community care — and why sharing updated, respectful birth knowledge with TBAs can improve outcomes.

👉 Katika jamii nyingi za Kimaasai, kujifungua hufanyika zaidi nyumbani na husimamiwa na wakunga wa jadi (TBAs) pamoja na wanawake wenye uzoefu kutoka katika jamii. Wakunga hawa wanaheshimiwa sana na hubeba maarifa yaliyorithiwa vizazi hadi vizazi.

🌿 Katika jamii nyingi za Kimaasai, kujifungua mara nyingi hufanyika nyumbani, kwa msaada wa wakunga wa jadi (TBAs) na wanawake wenye uzoefu kutoka katika jamii. Wakunga hawa wanaheshimiwa sana na hubeba maarifa yaliyopitishwa kutoka vizazi hadi vizazi.

Uzazi wa nyumbani unaonyesha nguvu ya utunzaji wa kijamii — na umuhimu wa kushirikisha wakunga wa jadi maarifa yaliyofanyiwa mahoresho kulingana na wakati, na yenye heshima ili kuboresha matokeo ya mama na mtoto.
