Care for Africa Foundation

Care for Africa Foundation Care for Africa is an initiative based in Tasmania caring for communities in Tarime, Tanzania.

Our mission is to making lasting change in the areas of poverty, lack of water, medical, educational and social enterprise services that self perpetuate and empower the community. "I am committed to creating a lasting change and leaving behind a legacy that will ensure a life free of poverty for all. It will be a legacy that is built out of trust, respect, empathy and caring for all. We are empowe

ring them to be their own change, and that is where the reward lies."
–Diana Butler OAM, CEO of Care for Africa

The story began in 2005 with a group of Emergency Nurses at the Launceston General Hospital, Tasmania, Australia. After the nurses heard about the stories of poverty in the Tarime district in Tanzania, they filled and sent a shipping container laden with medical equipment and a generator for Dr Winani's Tarime Goodwill Foundation Hospital. In 2006, Emergency Nurse, Diana Butler and Dr Peter Hewitt went on their epic journey to deliver the goods from the Launceston Community to the people of Africa. Diana and Peter were overwhelmed by the health and educational needs of the people of Tarime, they set up The Peter Hewitt Care for Africa Foundation Inc. Care for Africa currently supports health, education and water needs of people of the Tarime district.

Watch what happens when you give one cup of food to a hungry child in Tanzania.

Every morning, thousands of children across Tarime walk to school on empty stomachs. They try to focus, but hunger is louder than their teacher's voice. They fall asleep at their desks. They fail their exams. And eventually, they stop coming altogether.

No child chooses to give up. Hunger makes that choice for them.
But when children eat, everything changes. Care for Africa's Breakfast Programme is feeding 6,500 children every single day. And it's working.
For just $20, you can feed a child breakfast for a whole year. If we can count on you, click the link and fill the cups of these incredible children.

It was a truly special evening celebrating the launch of One Night at the Lake by Kath Scholes patron of the Christopher Strong Trust and now also patron of our Care for Africa Early Learning Centre in Tarime.

There was something deeply moving about the connections woven through the evening. The Christopher Strong Education Trust has so generously supported the construction of the Christopher and Sara Strong Early Learning Centre in Tarime, which will bring education and hope to the children of Tarime.

And to discover that Sara, the main character in Katherine’s beautiful novel, is named after Christopher’s beloved wife Sara Strong added an especially touching layer of meaning to the story.

A highlight of the evening was watching Katherine Scholes personally sign a copy of her book for Jon Hosford, trustee of the Christopher Strong Education Trust; a simple yet heartfelt moment that reflected the generosity and connection shared throughout the night.

It was a reminder of how stories, people, and purpose can come together in the most beautiful way- linking Tasmania and Tanzania, and the many lives touched along the way.

Six months ago, we stood together at Kembwe Primary School and planted the seedlings of real change 🌱

100 fruit trees — mango, avocado, pawpaw, orange, and pineapple — now grow as a school orchard for children who walk kilometres every day, often on empty stomachs.

Today my heart is full seeing these beautiful children nurturing their trees with so much love and pride. The growth has been incredible!

Thank you .abdallah for following up and supporting this journey every step of the way 💚

This is what hope looks like.

This is what change looks like.

Six months ago, Care for Africa visited Kembwe Primary School and together we planted the seeds of something truly special 🌱

With your support, 100 fruit trees — mango, avocado, pawpaw, orange and pineapple — were gifted to establish a school orchard for children who walk many kilometres to school each day, often on empty tummies.

Today, it’s incredible to see the children caring for their trees with such pride and joy, and how quickly they are growing.

Thank you to Abdallah for his ongoing support and follow-up — and thank you to our wonderful community for making this possible.

This is the power of community. This is lasting change 💚

Thrilled to share that Care for Africa is featured across an 8-page spread in Phil Harte’s prestigious annual Classic Lifestyle!

We were honored to host Sam Bloom, who visited Tarime to see our work firsthand, and a special thank you to her husband Cameron Bloom, whose incredible photography captured our programs so beautifully.

The book will be featured in first-class and business-class airport lounges, including Qantas and Qatar Airways lounges, as well as in luxury venues like Hilton Hotels & Resorts, helping to share our story and the impact we’re making in Tanzanian communities with an international audience.

Exciting news! Our generous friends at the Rotary Club of Devonport North have just pledged $8,000 to match every donation for our Majimaji water bore campaign.
Dollar for dollar. Every gift you make will be doubled.
This means:

Your $50 becomes $100
Your $150 becomes $300
Your $300 becomes $600

But here's the thing - once the $8,000 match is gone, it's gone.
Right now, over 600 people in Majimaji are drinking from a contaminated pond because they have no other choice. This Easter, we have the chance to build our 23rd deep water bore and give them clean, safe water for life.

Please don't wait. This is your moment to double your impact.

Will you help us build this bore?
