Happy International Labor Day to workers everywhere! Like many places around the world, today is Labor Day in Tanzania, or "Sikukuu ya Wafanyakazi" in Swahili.

Workers are at the heart of so much of what Empower Tanzania does. Our economic empowerment and agricultural programs are, at their heart, about dignifying and empowering the work everyday Tanzanians do to support themselves and their families.

And, of course, we have an incredible team in Tanzania and the United States, working hard every day to make these projects a reality.

This weekend, Tanzania celebrated Union Day!

Celebrated each year on April 26th, Union Day marks the joining of Tanganyika and Zanzibar, whose territories and names combined in 1964 to create modern-day Tanzania.

This photo from one of our staff safari trips showcases just a glimpse of Tanzania's beauty and promise. Your support helps propel the people of Tanzania into a brighter future -- thank you!

Happy Earth Day!

This week, students in the villages of Ndolwa and Menamo celebrated Earth Day by planting 1,660 trees around their schools, water sources, and communities.

Mr. Frank Augustine Temu, the Assistant Same District Forest and Environmental Conservation Officer, came to demonstrate the best way to plant each tree, and both planting days were rainy, which will help these seedlings survive!

Families in both villages were excited to add these trees to their community -- they will bring shade, beauty, and environmental benefits for both Ndolwa and Menamo. They've told us to make sure we check on the trees each time we visit their villages. Everyone is excited to see them grow and thrive, and keep the environment "green and clean," as our Farming and Water Projects Program Manager Joseph Johnson Kimbwereza reports.

The 1,660 trees planted were six varieties, which will serve a variety of uses:

- Delonix Regia Trees (Mikrismasi) - for Christmas, ornaments, shade, timber, firewood, etc.
- Senna Siamea Trees (Misaji) & Neem Trees (Mikwinini) - shade, firewood, etc.
- Afzelia Quanzensis Trees/Pody Mahogany Trees (Mikomba) & Jacaranda Trees (Mijakaranda) - mostly for timber, but also provide shade and firewood
- Tamarind Trees/Tamarindus Indica Trees (Mikwaju) - fruit, timber, and firewood

Happy Earth Day, and thank you for making initiatives like this one possible!

We're thrilled to announce a new partnership with the Tanzanian Institute of Education - the Afya kwa Maisha (Health for Life) program!

In light of the RHRP program (pictured here) in Same District's success, the Tanzanian Institute of Education asked that Empower Tanzania develop a similar program for the Babati Town Council area in Mayara Region. This age-appropriate, science-based, comprehensive sexuality program addresses the concerns of the community and government officials regarding high levels of gender-based violence, STIs, and schoolgirl pregnancies. Building on the success of the ICHP, Empower Tanzania continues to work closely with local and national science, educational, and medical officials to implement the school-based program to all 32,000 students in Babati Town Council by the beginning of the 2026 school year.

Over the first few months of 2026, the Empower Tanzania team has met with education officials to ensure this comprehensive program meets needs. The original educational manual written for the Same District RHRP has undergone additional extensive review and revisions as required to be approved for use nationally and for this new program. Research will be conducted to demonstrate effectiveness at achieving program objectives.

We couldn't be prouder of our health and education teams for bringing this essential curriculum to the students of Tanzania!

Today we recognize not one, but two major milestones!

Karume Day celebrates the life of Zanzibar President, and first Vice President of Tanzania, Abeid Amani Karume, on the anniversary of his assassination in 1972. Today is a national holiday in Tanzania, and a special service was held at his gravesite. Karume was instrumental in the union of Taganyika and Zanzibar to form present-day Tanzania!

While Karume Day is celebrated in Tanzania, World Health Day is a global celebration of a cause dear to us: health for life! Celebrated on the anniversary of the World Health Organization's founding, each year has a theme. This year's is “Together for health. Stand with science.”

Our health programs are science based, rigorously researched, and community-based. We're proud to be part of the movement and promote access to good health for all people, everywhere, every day!

It's World Water Day!

In many parts of Tanzania and around the world, clean water isn't easily accessible. When water isn't safe to drink, or simply isn't there at all, it underscores how vital water is to us all. While most Americans can simply turn on the tap, in many places around the world, the need to find, transport, and store fresh water takes valuable time and skill, and disrupts daily life.

This year, you'll hear more from us about a much-needed water project. World Water Day is today, but clean, safe water is a lifetime need for so many. We invite you to join the movement with a monthly donation: https://empowertz.app.neoncrm.com/np/clients/empowertz/donation.jsp?campaign=20

Happy International Women's Day!

Since 1911, International Women's Day has celebrated the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.

Empower Tanzania's commitment to empowering women is at the forefront of everything we do. Women play vital leadership roles in our organization, both in Tanzania and in the US. Many of our programs focus on eliminating gender-based violence and the economic empowerment of women, especially Vumwe Wezesha, a group of survivors-turned-entrepreneurs that we're proud to support as they seek work toward formal recognition from the Tanzanian government. But even programs that don't formally address women's issues empower the women of Tanzania.

In Tanzania, women are often responsible for bringing drinking water home to their families. Clean water projects empower these women.

Girls often face hurdles in completing their schooling, especially once they hit puberty. Education projects empower these young women.

Women often take on caretaker roles in their communities. Healthcare programs empower these women.

Sustainable farming gives families not just economic support, but keeps food on the table. Agricultural projects empower the women of these families.

Today, we celebrate the stories of thousands of empowered women across Tanzania and around the world, who uplift themselves, their families, their communities, and all of us with them.

Tanzania's Long Rains have begun!

The Long Rains, in March, April, and May have consistent, heavy rain. The Short Rains, in November and December, typically have frequent short bursts of rain. These rainy and dry seasons affect the rhythm of agriculture and daily life in Tanzania, including for our students at the Same Learning Center.

These cycles of rain are one of the biggest factors in our upcoming water projects, as we work with engineers and government officials to find ways to make clean, safe water accessible year-round to Tanzanian communities!

You can support our mission with a donation: https://empowertz.app.neoncrm.com/np/clients/empowertz/donation.jsp?campaign=3

A new addition at the Same Learning Center - gas-burning ovens!

While a "new oven" may seem like a simple milestone, these were a two years in the making! The ovens had to be custom fabricated to support the large pots of porridge and rice that feed our Same Learning Center students every day.

Kitchen smoke is a serious health hazard in many Tanzanian homes and communities. Even with ventilation, cooking over wood or charcoal produces heavy smoke that can fill the air. The smoke disproportionately affects women, who do the majority of the cooking.

These clean, gas-burning ovens keep smoke out of the SLC's kitchens, benefitting both students and staff. They're well worth the work and wait!

Today, we celebrate the International Day of Education!

Designated by the United Nations in 2018, the International Day of Education is a "celebration of the role of education for peace and development." We couldn't agree more!

In Tanzania, education is a deeply-held cultural value, but families often face challenges ensuring their children have access to educational opportunities. With your support, our Learning Center, in Same District, and the Vudee Kid's Club both strive toward this mission. Dedicated staff work tirelessly to provide students with tutoring, as well as the meals and supplies they need to stay focused on their studies.

This past school year was the first time we were able to sponsor secondary school tuition and fees, ensuring that students at the Same Learning Center can continue their education -- and none of that happens without you.

Thank you for supporting our educational mission in Tanzania. We hope you'll join us in celebrating the International Day of Education as an opportunity to empower children in Tanzania, the U.S., and around the world!
