Police Gender Desk Officers are often among the first points of contact for survivors of violence.

How they listen, respond and follow up can shape a survivor’s journey towards safety and justice.
From 19–21 August, UZIKWASA brought together Police Gender Desk Officers from every district in Tanga Region not for another training on procedures, but for something deeper:
Reflective Leadership.
Three days to pause, learn from experience and ask the harder questions:
→ How am I using the power entrusted to me?
→ Am I really listening?
→ What impact do my actions have on the people I am meant to protect?
At UZIKWASA, reflection is not a “soft skill.”
It is a pathway to strengthening empathy, accountability, listening and collaboration qualities that matter when responding to violence against women and children.
The training also created space for officers to strengthen their commitment to working with Tanga’s NPA-VAWC Committees and other community actors in preventing and responding to violence.
Because ending violence takes more than knowing the procedures.
It takes leaders willing to look inward, use power responsibly, listen differently and turn reflection into action.
From reflection → action → transformation.

World Oceans Day 2026
The ocean is more than a resource; it is life, livelihood, culture, and resilience for coastal communities.
At UZIKWASA, experience has taught us that the future of our oceans is inseparable from the empowerment of women. With support from , we work alongside communities in Pangani through dialogue, reflective leadership, climate action, and Pangani FM, building champions of coastal stewardship and sustainable use of marine resources.
Since 2023, we have supported the establishment of 12 village environmental committees across Pangani, each developing gender-sensitive climate action plans. In coastal villages, Beach Management Committees actively participate in planning and implementation, protecting water sources, enacting village bylaws on marine resource use, and opening pathways to blue economy opportunities.
Through Pangani FM, communities engage with topics including seaweed farming, crab fattening, mangrove regeneration, and sustainable fisheries, connecting science with indigenous knowledge and lived coastal experience.
Women have led the way from chairing environmental committees to championing blue economy initiatives and adaptation measures tailored to their coastal communities.
Young people are also stepping up. Through the Ng'arisha Pangani youth taskforce, trained youth are advocating for responsible waste management and holding their communities accountable for the health of our ocean and coastline.
This World Oceans Day, we celebrate every community, leader, woman, and young person taking action for our coasts and our future.

Through the sustained support of UZIKWASA, women leaders engaged through the NPA-VAWC Committees have become a vital bridge between communities and government structures in villages across Pangani. Working closely with local leaders, schools, and families, they have strengthened community action on child safety, girls’ education, and the prevention of violence against women and children.

As a result, communities are taking more coordinated and proactive steps to keep girls in school, improve protection systems, and respond to barriers affecting education and wellbeing. This collaboration has also contributed to visible improvements in learning environments and school performance in several villages, while increasing accountability and shared responsibility for safeguarding children’s rights and futures.

This work is supported by the Embassy of Ireland Tanzania.

What makes UZIKWASA’s reflective learning approaches central to our interventions is the power to ignite personal commitment to transformation, long-term sustainability, and individual effectiveness. By beginning with personal change, these approaches strengthen one’s ability to lead and act more effectively, while cultivating the awareness, values, and leadership needed to influence wider structural and societal change.
