The founder members of AFORD established the organization with a belief and commitment to contribute to the relief of poverty and distress as it is evident that 4 billion people globally are in living in poverty at the very base of the economic pyramid, while they constitute a significant part of producers and consumers of public and private sector goods and services. AFORD is set out to reach the
poor through Community Based Organizations, Non-Government Organizations and Local Government Institutions. AFORD approach is interactive capacity building for sustainable delivery of basic services (household water supply, education and health), and, improved productive sector activities contributing to Local Economic Development (LED). Governance is a cross cutting issue hence all interventions implemented by AFORD will be designed to enhance adherence to participation, accountability and transparency. AFORD will upholding rule of law, be sensitive to gender & equity issues while facilitating her clients and beneficiaries to do the same. AFORD is constituted by six founder members, and has a pool of eleven Resource Persons of multi-sectoral backgrounds. AFORD partners with other capacity building organisations and her members and partners are members of National and International capacity building and knowledge organizations such as KAWOCONET, IBDI, WSSCC, IKNOW Politics, Outcome Mapping Community of Practice among others
Having worked in Public, Private and NGO settings, the members of AFORD have vast and diversified knowledge, experiences and skills required to facilitate change process in the community. AFORD is dedicated toward making the complex interventions simple, without losing sight of the bigger picture. Therefore instead of dwelling in complexities of bureaucracies, corruption and rigid systems; AFORD will focus on what works and who makes change happen while adhering to the organizational core values stipulated below. AFORD will use innovation and laboratory approaches to ensure that results desires by the poor and vulnerable peoples and communities are realized within a short span of time while at the same time fostering learning for wider coverage. The key element in AFORD work is to build confidence amongst the poor so that they can actively participate in public and market oriented interventions. Civil Society knowledge will be used to facilitate advocacy and enhanced voice of the individuals and groups.
