Last week in Moshi šŸ‡¹šŸ‡æāœØ

The Asali Project, together with Asali Travel and Simba’s Footprints Foundation, had the honor of hosting 16 Occupational Therapy master’s and doctoral students and two professors from California State University Dominguez Hills.

During their time here, students worked alongside doctors at KCMC Hospital, learning firsthand how occupational therapy treatments are thoughtfully adapted to fit local cultural contexts. They also gained valuable hands-on experience with incredible local organizations, including Songambele and CCBRT Hospital.

We’re excited to see how this partnership continues to grow—strengthening local hospitals and organizations here in Tanzania while enriching the American students’ educational experience through real-world, field-based learning. This exchange is about more than clinical skills; it’s about shared learning, mutual respect, and building long-term collaboration. šŸŒšŸ’›

One of the projects Asali funded at is the creation of their community shop. Women from the Women’s Empowerment Program create beautiful batik and handmade products to sell there.

We also collaborate with other women’s groups and organizations to showcase and sell community-made goods. One of these partners is , an organization working with Maasai communities across Tanzania to end female ge***al mutilation. Today, we had the honor of meeting some of the incredible women behind their stunning beaded work.

Congratulations to the graduate! šŸŽ“

Herbert joined the Asali Music Studio program at in 2019, where he quickly demonstrated discipline, leadership, and a relentless work ethic. Peter Roman, Music Program Lead at Asali Music Studio, recognized Herbert’s raw talent and drive, making him an ideal candidate for higher education support. Thanks to Asali’s sponsorship, Herbert pursued his studies at the Bagamoyo Arts and Cultural Institute , where he spent three years mastering music and sound production. Today, he graduates with a degree, and we couldn’t be more proud of his accomplishments! šŸ‘šŸ»

The Story behind Asali...

Sitting on a dock in Maine one afternoon in September, Asali’s founders discussed past experiences and future aspirations. As a group of incredibly varied professionals, the founders began to notice a shared passion of helping children, developed through significantly different experiences. When the topic turned to childhood quality of life, and issues that many of us had seen throughout travels and international development work, we realized that we could become part of the solution. Three of our founders have lived and worked in various parts of Africa and noticed that in an often saturated global nonprofit market, many of the most impactful programs are lacking resources and visibility. After fireside conversations and much more research, it became clear to us that the best way to truly impact childhood quality of life is to work with these existing initiatives.

We believe in the power of local leaders and grassroots organizations to best identify the needs of their own communities. For many of these organizations, there is a disconnect between a strong vision and its realization. We can bridge this gap.

In Swahili, the national language of Tanzania, Asali means honey. Childhood is the sweet stuff that supports a health community. Join our hive, let’s make some honey!
