Faraja Trust Fund (hereafter referred to as Faraja) is a non-government Organization established in September 1991 in response to HIV/AIDS Epidemic, since its inception the organization has been frontline in the war against the spread of HIV/AIDS and its impact to the people of Morogoro. The 1st project implemented by Faraja in 1991 to 1993 was that of resocialising commercial s*x workers from one
of the biggest brothel in East Africa, which was regarded as the reservoir of HIV infection in Morogoro. The project which was funded by DANIDA managed to remove more than 250 women from commercial s*x work and since then the brothel has been demolished. HIV screening revealed that 62% of these women were HIV positive so removing them from prostitution had a great impact in the reduction of HIV infection among the community members. Concurrently with the CSWs progam, Faraja established an integrated HIV/AIDS prevention, supportive care and coping services in Morogoro. This program was funded by CIDA through Canadian Public Health associations NGO called Southern African AIDS Training Program (SAT). The program started in 1993 to 2003. Also in 1997 the Ford Foundation Co-funded the integrated program but with more emphasis on school Health program up to the year 2004. Currently Faraja is conducting a program of helping orphans and vulnerable children, human rights program and mobilizing the community to build economic capability by pulling their resources together and establish viable income generating activities. The vision of Faraja is to be the foremost competent and effective service provider in alleviating diseases, poverty and suffering through care and support of HIV/AIDS affected individuals and families in Morogoro Region.
