The time for the coral cookies is now πŸͺΈ

As we have finished outplanting our branching corals onto the reefstars, we are going onto the next stage, which will be outplanting our coral cookies.

Initial phase is a trial phase managed by , where they have outplanted a total of 216 corals over 3 different sites at 3 different depths, to monitor and see if there is better survival rates on the different sites. As unfortunately, most of the coral cookies we outplanted last year died.

So after 4 months, we will have an idea of where we will plan for our remaining coral cookies to be outplanted.

Today we were lucky to be invited again for the Ranger training for MIMCA, TUMCA, PECCA and Chwaka Bay, where we talked about corals, what they are and their importance for the health of the ocean πŸͺΈ

We talked about how we can protect the corals, and the work LindaBahari does to restore some of the snorkeling sites at Mnemba Atoll with outplanting corals onto the artificial snorkeling site.

It was an amazing morning with good discussions about the challenges we face with the restoration, challenges with enforcing the rules and what small changes we can do to do better for our oceans πŸ™πŸΎπŸͺΈ

In Tanzania, most divers are predominently male, but we are lucky to have on our team amazing who is training her way up the ladder and has a massive interest in our coral restoration project πŸͺΈ We are so proud of her πŸ’ͺπŸΏπŸ™πŸΎ

Saturday was spent on improving our restoration site, with retying some loose coral fragments and moving some of the reef stars to ensure better stability πŸͺΈ It is all a learning process and we are always trying to improve as we go.

More outplanting is on hold, until the new years as we need to wait for the temperatures to drop.

The thing that keeps it all together, is something as simple as a cable tie. Though made of plastic, cable ties are the most sustainable and durable method of attaching corals to structures. Generally over a short period of time, the coral will start to grow over the cable tie, as can be seen here on our artificial structure. This is approximately 1 month of growth πŸͺΈ

Today 50 pieces of corals got outplanted at Mnemba Atoll together with πŸͺΈ These are our coral cookies which we use coral clips to attach to the reef. We were 6 divers and it still took us 1 hour and 20 minutes for 50 pieces.

Within the 50 pieces of corals, there are 9 different species of corals, ensuring the diversity of the reef ❀️
