Advancing Biodiversity Conservation and Community Resilience in the Tarangire-Manyara Ecosystem

Across the vital wildlife corridors of the Tarangire-Manyara ecosystem in northern Tanzania, endangered and threatened carnivores share critical, unfenced habitats with communities. At TACCEI, we use rigorous scientific research, including camera trap data, to monitor wildlife hotspots and movements across the landscape. This allows us to move from reactive crisis management to proactive prevention, constructing predator-proof wire bomas that protect pastoralist livestock during high-risk nighttime hours.

Securing herds directly prevents retaliatory killings of carnivores, safeguards indigenous pastoralist livelihoods, and ensures that these vulnerable apex predators can safely navigate shared landscapes. Every boma installed creates a measurable, immediate shield for both community stability and biodiversity.

When the Screen Lights Up, a New Generation of Environmental Champions Emerges!

At Tanzania Conservation and Community Empowerment Initiative (TACCEI), we believe that lasting conservation starts with education. By inspiring students today, we are nurturing future leaders who will protect our forests, wildlife, water resources, and environment.

Through our Environmental Education Film Screening Program, we bring powerful conservation stories directly into schools. As the screen comes alive, students witness both the beauty of nature and the environmental challenges facing our world. For many, it is their first opportunity to see these realities beyond the pages of a textbook.

These screenings do more than educate; they inspire action. Students gain knowledge, develop a deeper appreciation for nature, and carry these important messages back to their families and communities, creating a ripple effect of environmental awareness and positive change.

Big things are growing at the Tukuta Girls Secondary School!

Recently, our incredible Community Restoration Officer, ραℓσмα♡†✨ , led hands-on training sessions with the bright minds in our Mazingira Clubs. From mastering the art of sowing seeds to the daily care and precise watering of delicate seedlings, these young women are gaining essential skills in environmental conservation and sustainability.

But that’s not all; we’ve taken this project a step further!

Our newly established community nursery features a unique dual-purpose design:

A tree nursery to grow the roots of tomorrow's restored ecosystems and a vegetable garden to provide immediate, tangible food security and agricultural training for the school and the nearby community.

By investing in these students, we aren't just planting trees; we are nurturing the next generation of conservation leaders and building resilient communities.

Protecting water sources, empowering communities through sustainable beekeeping 🐝💧

We are thrilled to launch our new community resilience project in Loliondo! With generous funding from our long-term partner, the Global Landscapes Forum, TACCEI has handed over 25 beehives to this community.

Strategically placed along the Kisamis River, the sole water source for over 1,000 people, these hives create a natural buffer against encroachment while generating sustainable income through honey production.

To anchor long-term financial independence, we also established two village savings and loan associations (VSLAs) using our unique rotational grants model. Through tailored training and consistent monitoring, this project balances critical ecosystem protection with thriving community livelihoods.

Real impact goes beyond merely providing funds; it’s about sharing the journey.

This past April, we welcomed 3 new groups of 60+ women into our VSLA program with interest-free micro-grants! They join over 20 other groups we’ve supported since 2023, whose collective impact is improving livelihoods, supporting education, and driving environmental sustainability through eco-entrepreneurship.

What sets our initiative apart is how it is built: these are not typical loans. Our model is built on a unique rotational system in which a recipient group uses the interest-free capital for 12 months before passing it on to the next standby group, creating a continuous cycle of community empowerment.

To ensure their success, being on the ground every single month is our standard routine, a commitment we have maintained consistently since our very first group was supported back in 2023. We don't just fund; we walk with them every step of the way, monitoring progress and cheering them on.

In just a few months, our newest members have already revitalized their businesses, shifted their mindsets to recognize more economic opportunities, uplifted their families, and improved their living standards.
Watching their confidence soar and seeing their dreams come to life is our greatest reward.

This initiative is about unlocking true and lasting potential. We deeply appreciate the support from our donor, FEMI, for believing in our model and making this vital work possible.

We are excited to share our 2025 Annual Report, highlighting a year of impactful conservation and community empowerment across the Tarangire-Manyara Ecosystem.

Some of the key milestones include:
- 4,500+ livestock protected from carnivore attacks.
- 20,000+ community members trained in environmental education.
- 20,000+ tree seedlings planted to restore degraded land.
- 10,000+ participants mobilized across 10 villages through Mazingira Cup tournaments.
- 300+ women empowered, generating TZS 100M+ through VSLAs.
- 15+ fortified livestock enclosures built to mitigate human-wildlife conflict.
