Mpingo Conservation & Development Initiative

Mpingo Conservation & Development Initiative Supporting rural Tanzanians to collectively take control of, manage & benefit from forests, through sustainable, FSC-certified timber production and REDD+.

At MCDI, we build the capacity of communities in south-eastern Tanzania to generate sustainable and equitable income from miombo woodlands by assisting them to get legal ownership of village land forest reserves (VLFRs), through participatory forest management (PFM), as well as implementing REDD projects and FSC certifying timber stocks for national and international markets. Specifically, we:

Pr

omote community-based forest management, so local people can own, manage and benefit from their forests;

Facilitate ethical, sustainable and long-lasting forest-based income generating opportunities that encourage communities to use their resources sustainably (specifically through timber and carbon);

Raise awareness about the benefits that can come from forest conservation; and

Provide tools and enhanced capacity so that communities can demand improved natural resource governance systems.

It was a pleasure for the MCDI CEO, who also serves as Chairperson of NaCoNGO, to join WWF Tanzania, WCS, TNC, and IUCN in meeting WWF Regional Director for Eastern and Southern Africa, Ms. Yvonne Godo, together with the WWF Tanzania leadership team, on 12 May 2026 at White Sands Hotel in Dar es Salaam. The engagement provided an important opportunity to strengthen collaboration around shared conservation priorities and sustainable development in Tanzania. MCDI values this spirit of partnership and looks forward to translating dialogue into meaningful action.

Hope is taking root in Kikole 🌱

In May 2026, community members in Kikole Village, Kilwa District planted 2,000 Mpingo seedlings to restore their village forests. This is community-led conservation in action β€” restoring nature, protecting biodiversity, and building a greener future.

A big thank you to YAMAHA Corporation for standing with Mpingo Conservation (MCDI) as a valued private sector partner in this important work.

Be part of the change β€” support, share, and help grow hope.
