CEN was founded in 2015 as a tool to combine local refugee-run organizations in order to provide effective and direct empowerment for the most marginalized and disadvantaged people, especially women in the refugee community of Nyarugusu camp in Tanzania. CEN is composed of five local community-based refugee-run organizations, which operate in different parts of the camp and provide various service
s to the refugee community. Union for Progress and Deliverance of Humanitarians (UPDH) is a savings and loan focused micro-finance organization for women in the camp. Dafi Students Organization in Tanzania (DAFISOTA) provides vocational training in the camp community. Bureau du Developpement et des Oeuvres Social (BDOS) [English translation: the Office for Development and Social Works] develops small gardens to provide food for hungry households and it also provides reproductive health trainings in the camp community. Non violence Communication Trainings (NVCT) provides family conflict resolution and peace training seminars in the camp. Children Training Center (CTC) focuses on training children ages 8–15 years old in how to respect themselves and women and also provides basic training against discrimination.
