Project Wezesha

Project Wezesha Project Wezesha ensures access to post secondary education for youth in Tanzania. We also provide study camps twice a year to foster academic success.

We support young men and women in high school, vocational school, diploma programs, and university. Project Wezesha is a nonprofit organization that strives to increase access to post secondary education for youth in rural Tanzania. Currently we are working in Western Tanzania in the Kigoma Region. Project Wezesha provides academic support during secondary school (e.g., study camps, study material

s). We then cover costs of postsecondary education (e.g., high school, vocational school, diploma programs and university). Project Wezesha also serves as the in country partner of Girls Education International (Girls Ed). We support a cohort of young women attending high school, vocational school, diploma and certificate programs. In 2020, 11 young women enrolled in universities around the country.

Project Wezesha co-founders Rai Farrelly and Lucas Lameck with our Education Director, Madaga Fadhili were thrilled to present together about our academic study camps at the Africa ELTA conference in Dar es Salaam this past June. After the conference, we returned to Kigoma and visited Tanganyika Modern Secondary School - the amazing project launched by Madaga and Lucas, the co-directors.

Rai's TESOL International Association colleagues Kisha Bryan and Elisabeth Chan visited and had the chance to meet the students and teachers. We spent time with Lucas and Madaga's families, visited Gombe Stream National Park with students from Tanganyika Modern, and met with current and former Project Wezesha and Girls Education International students.

We're excited for ongoing collaborations between Tanganyika Modern Secondary School and Project Wezesha!

Happy International Day of the Girl Child!

On , we stand with girls who are rewriting the narrative on early marriage, economic disparity and social inequity.

In Tanzania, many girls would be forced to leave school due to poverty or early marriage. But with support, they’re becoming teachers, lawyers, and leaders.

Girls Education International partners with Project Wezesha to make college possible for girls who never thought it could be.

We held a meeting with current and former students in Kigoma. Several of the young women who recently graduated from university were reunited to share their experiences with each other. A new cohort of high school students joined to discuss their first year of high school (Form 5).

We had the pleasure of having two representatives of the Tanzania English Language Teacher Association (TELTA) - Mwanaidi and our very own Madaga. Mwana, Madaga, Lucas, and Rai provided encouragement and guidance to all the girls related to continuing their studies and beginning their careers. They were reminded of the power they have to make choices that will impact their lives and the lives of their families.

They were particularly inspired by Mwana who is an English language teacher at a local secondary school and with the US State Department’s newly launched English Access Program in Kigoma. She is also a TELTA leader and an amazing mother. She was an example to them of a strong woman who has found the balance between work and family, and still strives for more. She provided her contact to the girls and offered to be a mentor to anyone interested.

Stay tuned for updates on these young women!
