Partnership for Impact in Kigoma

CIVISCE is proud to partner with WAVE (Women in Africa Venturing Education), a student-led initiative from the University of St. Gallen working to advance women’s empowerment.

Through this collaboration:
✔ WAVE is mobilizing resources and bringing volunteers on the ground
✔ CIVISCE leads local implementation and community engagement

Together, we are implementing the She Builds programme — designed to strengthen existing women-led businesses through practical training, improved production, and increased income opportunities.

This work is grounded in real community needs identified through our recent assessment.

We are excited to move forward together and create meaningful, lasting impact.

We are proud to partner with WAVE (Women in Africa Venturing Education) on the upcoming She Builds programme in Kigoma.

This initiative will support women already running small businesses — including fish vendors, knitters, and poultry farmers — by strengthening their skills, improving production, and increasing income opportunities.

The programme is grounded in a needs assessment conducted by CIVISCE, which showed that women are not lacking motivation — but are limited by access to tools, business skills, and market opportunities.

What we are learning from women entrepreneurs in Kigoma

CIVISCE recently conducted a needs assessment with women engaged in small businesses such as fish vending, knitting, soap making, and poultry farming.

Our findings show that:
✔ Most women are already experienced in business
✔ Key challenges include lack of capital, materials, and equipment
✔ Many women do not keep business records
✔ There is strong interest in training on marketing, saving, and improving product quality

Importantly, some women — especially fish vendors — shared experiences of verbal harassment when accessing fish supply, highlighting that women face both economic and social barriers.

These insights will guide our upcoming She Builds programme, which aims to strengthen women-led businesses through practical training and targeted support.

We remain committed to building solutions that are community-driven, sustainable, and impactful.
