The learning crisis is real. Millions of children in Africa struggle to read, write, and grasp basic literacy and numeracy skills, even while attending school at age 10. No matter how much we discuss the issue, the statistics won’t improve unless we address the root causes. At SNL, we are challenging the status quo by tackling one of the most critical drivers: the quality of teaching and teachers. We believe that improving foundational literacy and numeracy starts with empowering teachers. By equipping educators with practical skills, ongoing support, and the confidence to make effective instructional decisions every day, we can create classrooms where learning truly happens. Low-cost technologies are leveraged to facilitate continuous teacher professional development, ensuring that teachers have the tools they need to succeed. We are moving beyond ad-hoc, theory-heavy workshops to evidence-based support that prioritizes adaptive pedagogy, contextualized learning materials that reflect language and socio-cultural realities, and supportive systems for assessment, mentoring, and resources. This approach enables teachers to balance rigour and relevance in every lesson. Through our SPARK program, we address systemic gaps at every level—from classroom instruction to ministry-level accountability. When teachers are empowered, children succeed, and communities flourish. Read more here: www.sheddysnewlook.org
