"Environmental movies - What is its green message?”

Before the Flood is a 2016 documentary which shows a 3 year journey conducted by DiCaprio and co-creator and director Fisher Stevens.

They went to every angle of the world to document the shocking impacts of climate change questioning humanity's ability to reverse the situation to save the world.

They learnt a lot and witnessed on their incredible journey learning that the world’s climate was interconnected and that it was fast breaking apart and this required a quick intervention.

The film main aim was to give people a sense of urgency and to make them understand particular issues to be addressed to solve the problem. One of the main concerns was the carbon emission and to address this they came up with carbon tax and investment in renewables and to bring less money and subsidies out of oil companies.

They urged to use the power of the ballot box to win this change from political leaders who do not believe in modern science or the scientific method or empirical truth.

I chose this particular movie because it shows a sense of urgency in addressing environmental problems by assessing the root causes and coming up with solutions such as sanctions on oil companies that would curtail the root causes like carbon tax.

The green message here is renewable energy that restore themselves after a short period and do not diminish.

Remembering Nyerere's Legacy

23/09/2020

Children and Youth Development Initiative (CYDI) intends to initiate an Eco-system adaptation project for Rural Resilience in Dodoma in the central region of Tanzania.

The project will involve construction of energy saving stoves, establishment and distribution of tree nurseries to communities and preparation and use of bio briquette made from char dust.

We are currently doing a feasibility study to identify at least to wards with need and which will benefit from the project.

With the ongoing climate change associated with problems such as deforestation, the production and use of energy saving stoves, biogas, cob-ovens and production and use of briquettes made from char dust is a better solution to reduce deforestation which will in turn ensure alternative livelihoods for the people who mostly depend on wood to produce charcoal.

Livelihoods such as agriculture, livestock, fisheries and forestry have been impacted by climate impacts and these require serious concerted efforts to train people on the importance of protecting the environment we live in.

Some of the main activities to be carried out in order to reach the project goal include training, preparation and construction of energy saving stoves, establishment and distribution of tree nurseries to communities, preparation and use of bio briquette which is made from char dust, training and preparation of biogas digester for the two wards.

All these will aid in improving and conserving the environment reducing degradation through deforestation.

Eco-system changes due to climate changes in Tanzania

Eco-system changes due to climate changes impact on temperature and rainfall patterns across Tanzania, whether associated with human induced climate change and/or long-term natural variability, have numerous and extensive impacts on the varied agro-ecological systems across the country, as well as the built environment of towns and cities.

Some of these impacts are very direct; others are mediated through complex feedback systems. As mentioned above, many of the ecosystems are already in a degraded state due to human activity and this makes them more susceptible to the impacts of climate change, as are many of the infrastructure networks that constitute the built environment.

These impacts are in turn experienced very differently by the various sectors, communities and households across Tanzania. Currently, large portions of the population are particularly vulnerable to climate change because of their limited livelihood base, poor access to markets and services (notably water supply, energy, transport, healthcare and social welfare), and weaknesses in the institutions that govern them.

One of the biggest challenges of the 21st century is climate change. The accumulation of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2) from different sources in the atmospheres promotes global warming (IPCC, 2007).

The major source of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is the burning of fossil fuels that is estimated to contribute about 80%. Land use and land cover change especially forest deforestation and degradation contribute the remaining percentage (Stern, 2007).

Among the major impacts of climate change in Tanzania is its influence on ecosystem services. Tanzania is endowed with different ecosystems and thus a variety of ecosystem services. While we are aware of the different ecosystem services that are provided by different ecosystems in Tanzania, knowledge on how these services are vulnerable to climate change and to what extent they will be impacted by climate change are not well known.

The impact of climate change poses serious challenges to sustainable livelihoods and economic development, particularly for least developed countries like Tanzania. The adverse impacts of climate change are already noticeable in many countries including Tanzania.

The ramifications of climate change are particularly evident on environment, human health, food security, human settlements, economic activities, natural resources and physical infrastructure.

In recognition of these challenges, the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania is committed to work hard to address these problems including adaptation and mitigation of climate change.

The key issues to be addressed here include adaptation, mitigation, technology transfer and financial mechanisms to support implementation particularly of mitigation and adaptation activities.

Specifically, Tanzania is committed to participate in the development and implementation of the REDD (Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation) initiatives as proposed in the Bali Conference to combat deforestation and the challenges of climate change.

Expression of Interest (EOI)

Date: Tuesday, August 4, 2020

The Executive Director,
Tanzania Commission for AIDS,
TACAIDS Building,
Sokoine Drive/Luthuli Street,
P. O. Box 76987,
Dar es Salaam.

Dear Sir/Madam,

Sub: Expression of Interest (EOI) for the FUNDING UNDER GGML KILIMANJARO CHALLENGE AGAINST HIV AND AIDS TRUST FUND FOR IMPLEMENTATION OF HIV AND AIDS INTERVENTION IN TANZANIA Round I.

This is in response to your public notice published in the Guardian Newspaper on the 30th July 2020, inviting expression of interest for funding for implementation of HIV and AIDS intervention.

We hereby submit our expression of interest by giving the necessary information according to requirements after going through the eligibility criteria.

• Children and Youth Development Initiative (CYDI) with Reg. No. 00NGO/R/0224 partnering with Mara Counselling and Care Organization (MACCO) with Reg. No. 10NGO/00088880/2016.
• Both institutions have experience in implementing HIV and AIDS interventions.
• The problem to be addressed is “Lack of HIV and AIDS awareness among youth especially girls who are mostly vulnerable to unsafe s*x, STDs and s*xual violence.”
• Women account for more than half the number of people living with HIV worldwide. Young women aged 10-24 years old are twice as likely to acquire HIV as young men the same age.
• HIV disproportionately affects women and adolescent girls because of vulnerabilities created by unequal cultural, social and economic status.
• Unaccommodating attitudes towards s*x outside of marriage and the restricted social autonomy of women and young girls can reduce their ability to access s*xual health and HIV services.
• Much has been done to reduce mother-to-child transmission of HIV, but much more needs to be done to reduce the gender inequality and violence that women and girls at risk of HIV often face.
The general objective is to create social stability and awareness on reproductive health, HIV / AIDS and other related adolescence issues.

The key objectives to be addressed include:
i. To encourage Behavioral Change Communication (BCC)
ii. To create awareness, sensitization and conduct community outreaches
iii. To provide guidance and counselling
iv. To distribute information, education and communication materials.
v. To perform HIV/AIDS counselling and testing programs

The general approach CYDI will use is prevention, treatment and care in order to achieve comprehensive response to HIV/AIDS.

Based on the best available evidence, this approach will include a wide range of interventions for providing knowledge of HIV status, preventing transmission of HIV and other s*xually transmitted infections, and encouraging treatment and care for HIV/AIDS. Interventions under this strategy for action: enabling people to know their HIV status and encouraging abstinence, to be faithful and the use of condoms.

The requested budget to cover Dodoma and Mara is TZS 50,000,000.00 as per the attached budget.

The information furnished by us in this expression of interest is correct to the best of our knowledge.

Based on this information, we understand you would be able to evaluate in order to pre-qualify us for the grant.

We remain sincerely yours,

On behalf of the firm: Children and Youth Development Initiative (CYDI) and Mara Counselling and Care Organization (MACCO).
