AATZ Joins Tengeru Institute for Community Development in Community Climate Resilience Centre Inauguration

ActionAid Tanzania (AATZ) proudly participated in the inauguration of the Community Climate Resilience Centre (CCRC) at the Tengeru Institute for Community Development (TICD), marking an important milestone in advancing locally led climate action and resilience building. The establishment of the Centre demonstrates a strong commitment to creating inclusive platforms where communities, civil society, and academic institutions can collaboratively address the growing challenges posed by climate change. AATZ recognizes this initiative as a timely intervention that strengthens the connection between knowledge generation and practical community solutions for climate resilience.

This initiative is commendable for embracing the role of academia in supporting evidence-based advocacy and community empowerment. Through the Community Climate Resilience Centre, communities will have greater opportunities to benefit from academic research, innovations, and policy engagement that respond directly to local climate realities. The Centre is expected to serve as a bridge between researchers and grassroots actors, ensuring that scientific findings and adaptation strategies are translated into meaningful actions that improve livelihoods and strengthen resilience among vulnerable populations.

The inauguration ceremony was officiated by Hon. Reuben, Deputy Minister in the Vice President’s Office (Union and Environment), whose presence underscored the government’s commitment to strengthening climate resilience and promoting collaborative climate action in Tanzania. In his remarks, Hon. Reuben emphasized the importance of partnerships among government institutions, academia, civil society organizations, and local communities in addressing the impacts of climate change and advancing sustainable development initiatives.

This inauguration also responds to AATZ’s long-standing aspiration to see academia actively integrated into community-led climate justice initiatives. This aligns closely with AATZ’s Country Strategy Paper Five (CSP 5), particularly its second strategic priority that focuses on strengthening community resilience and driving system change for climate justice. AATZ believes that partnerships between communities and academic institutions are essential for fostering sustainable adaptation pathways, influencing equitable climate policies, and ensuring that frontline communities are equipped with the knowledge and tools needed to withstand climate-related risks.

The future of climate negotiations becomes stronger when the voices closest to the realities of climate impacts are part of shaping them.

ActionAid Tanzania (AATZ), in collaboration with the Vice President’s Office, organized a National Stakeholders Pre-SB64 Technical Working Session in Dodoma, bringing together government institutions, CSOs, youth, women, technical experts, and importantly, grassroots communities ahead of the SB64 in Bonn, Germany.

The session convened representatives from 25 institutions and forums, creating a diverse and multi-stakeholder platform for dialogue. Participants included institutions such as the Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Natural Resources, Ministry of Water Sector, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Lands, Housing and Human Settlements Development, Bank of Tanzania (BOT), Azania Bank, NEMC, IUCN, Women Trust Fund, WATED, Chamwino Youth Forum, JUWACHA, JUVIEKA, Activista, among many others.

For too long, global climate discussions have often been separated from the lived realities of communities on the frontlines. This session created space where farmers, local actors, grassroots communities, and technical experts sat alongside policymakers to contribute perspectives that can help shape Tanzania’s engagement ahead of SB64. Because meaningful climate decisions should not only be discussed for communities, but with communities.

From budgets to bold community voices

Over the past weeks, ActionAid Tanzania through the Transformative Impact Fund (TIF) brought together women, youth, and smallholder farmers in Singida, Chamwino, and Kigoma to unpack one important question: Who really benefits from public agricultural budgets?

Facilitated by a governance expert alongside a national comic artist, the sessions combined public finance discussions with creative storytelling approaches to make budget analysis more accessible and engaging at community level.

Through participatory workshops and grassroots comics, communities explored district budget priorities, reflected on challenges facing agroecology and climate resilience, and translated technical public finance conversations into relatable stories and visual advocacy tools known as KomikiJamii.

Using art, dialogue, and lived experiences, the initiative helped turn policy discussions into practical community-centered reflections that people could easily relate to, question, and use to demand more inclusive and responsive budgeting.

ActionAid Tanzania was honored to participate in the United Republic of Tanzania’s National Consultative Meeting for the review of the East African Community (EAC) Climate Change Strategy (2026–2036), the EAC Climate Change Action Plan, and the drafting of Common Key Messages for COP31 to ensure alignment with national priorities across the region. 🌍🔥

Convened by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation in collaboration with GIZ, the two-day engagement held in Dodoma on 4th–5th May 2026 brought together representatives from Government institutions from both Mainland and Zanzibar, Civil Society Organizations (ESAFF and AATZ), and farmer representative from MVIWATA.

As climate impacts continue to intensify across East Africa, spaces like these are critical for shaping a regional climate agenda that is people-centered, inclusive, and grounded in the realities of communities most affected by the climate crisis.

For ActionAid Tanzania, this was an important opportunity to contribute perspectives on climate justice, adaptation, agroecology, resilient livelihoods, and meaningful participation of women, youth, and smallholder farmers in regional climate policy processes.

The road to COP31 must reflect Africa’s realities and priorities, from climate finance and adaptation to food systems transformation that leave no one behind.

Strengthening Farmers Beyond the Harvest

From 24th–25th April 2026, ActionAid Tanzania convened smallholder farmers from Dodoma, Singida, and Kigoma for a hands-on training on post-harvest handling, management, and value addition.

In many communities, the biggest loss doesn’t happen in the field, it happens after harvest. Limited storage, processing knowledge, and market access continue to reduce incomes and weaken food systems.

Through this training, farmers gained practical skills to:
- Reduce post-harvest losses
- Improve storage, handling, and preservation
- Add value to agricultural produce
- Strengthen market competitiveness and incomes

Delivered in collaboration with SIDO, the workshop emphasized women and youth participation and practical, locally adaptable solutions. Because building climate resilience means ensuring that every harvest counts from farm to market.

This initiative is part of our broader commitment to advancing agroecology, food security, and sustainable livelihoods through Transformative Impact Fund in Tanzania.

ActionAid Tanzania participated in the validation of the National Climate Change Response Strategy (NCCRS) stocktaking report, a critical moment to assess progress and gaps in Tanzania’s climate action journey.

Convened by the Vice President’s Office in collaboration with ForumCC, the session brought together 22 state and non-state actors, all committed to strengthening climate governance and accountability.

As part of the Climate Adaptation thematic group, ActionAid contributed to tracking progress made since the implementation of the NCCRS (2021–2026) in the agriculture sector.

Climate strategies must go beyond policy documents, they must deliver real impact for communities most affected by the climate crisis, especially women, youth, and smallholder farmers.

This validation process is a key step toward shaping a more responsive and inclusive next phase of Tanzania’s climate strategy.
