Young people are not just the leaders of tomorrow they are shaping today.

As part of the People Powering Biodiversity (PPB) Programme, young leaders came together for an open and engaging dialogue to reflect on their role in driving change from the community level to national, continental, and global platforms.

The discussion explored how youth can influence conservation, sustainable development, and decision-making processes, while amplifying their voices on issues that matter most to people and nature. It was a powerful reminder that when young people are empowered with knowledge, opportunities, and a platform to lead, they become unstoppable forces for positive change.

Through the PPB Programme, we continue to invest in youth leadership, recognizing that meaningful conservation and sustainable development can only be achieved when young people are actively involved in shaping solutions and leading action.

The future of biodiversity is people-powered—and youth are at the heart of that transformation.

A major milestone for the People Powering Biodiversity (PPB) Programme and community-led conservation in Tanzania.

Today, WWF Tanzania launched a TZS 1.2 billion Direct Financing Mechanism (DFM) under the People Powering Biodiversity (PPB) Programme, empowering local communities in Ruvuma Region to lead conservation efforts and sustainable livelihood initiatives.

The DFM is designed to place resources directly into the hands of communities, recognizing them as the true custodians of biodiversity and key partners in building resilient and sustainable landscapes. Through this investment, communities will strengthen the management of Village Land Forest Reserves (VLFRs), expand conservation based enterprises, and enhance local capacity through improved tools, equipment, and governance systems.

By reducing funding barriers and increasing local ownership, the PPB Programme is demonstrating how innovative conservation financing can deliver meaningful outcomes for both people and nature.

This initiative positions Ruvuma as a model for community-driven conservation financing and contributes to national and global biodiversity goals by ensuring that those closest to nature have the resources and authority to protect it.

When communities lead, conservation thrives.

Ahadi zimetolewa. Sasa ni wakati wa kuchukua hatua. Pamoja Inawezekana!

Under the theme “Climate Action”, this World Environment Day 2026 reminds us that meaningful change happens when communities take the lead in protecting and restoring nature.Across Tanzania, community-led conservation efforts are restoring degraded rangelands, strengthening sustainable land and livestock management, and building resilience to climate change. These actions are improving ecosystem health while also enhancing livelihoods and promoting coexistence between people and wildlife.

From improved grazing practices and habitat restoration to evidence-based land management and nature-friendly enterprises, communities are proving that climate action is most effective when it is locally driven and inclusive.
We value the contribution of the for supporting our projects such as Land for Life Project, Wildlife Credits Project, and REDAA Project. .

Wrapping Up the Youth Conservation Champions Annual Meeting

Leading by example, the Youth Conservation Champions came together to clean the Medeli Forest in Dodoma, putting the spirit of the Ishi Kijani, Ishi Kijanja campaign into action and demonstrating their commitment to protecting the environment.

Beyond the clean-up exercise, the young champions engaged in meaningful discussions, shared experiences, and exchanged innovative ideas on environmental conservation, climate resilience, and sustainable living. The gathering provided a valuable platform for learning, networking, and inspiring one another to become stronger advocates for nature.

In recognition of their dedication and active participation in clean cooking energy and climate change initiatives, WWF Tanzania awarded certificates to the participants. These young leaders continue to prove that lasting change starts with collective action, passion, and a shared vision for a greener and more sustainable future.

Together, we are nurturing a generation that is ready to lead the way toward a better tomorrow.

Youth Conservation Champions are turning environmental challenges into opportunities for innovation and sustainable development.

During a recent YCC meeting, young leaders were inspired by powerful stories of resilience, entrepreneurship, and environmental action in the clean energy sector. Neema Walter Moshi from Nishati Mix Technology shared how plastic waste challenges in her community inspired innovative solutions that generate both environmental and economic benefits. Likewise, Aneth Venance from Nishati ECO Solutions Limited highlighted her journey of developing clean cooking alternatives from biomass waste after witnessing the impacts of unsafe and inefficient energy sources.

The session also shed light on available opportunities, including financing mechanisms and government support for clean cooking initiatives, now recognized as a national development priority.

The key takeaway was clear: conservation is not only about protecting nature it is a catalyst for innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainable livelihoods. By empowering young people with knowledge, skills, and opportunities, we are nurturing a generation of leaders committed to building a greener and more sustainable future for people and nature.♻️
