The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) community, led by Chancellor and former President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, joined family, friends and national leaders in paying a heartfelt farewell to the late Mr. Jackson Isdory Mushi, a dedicated communications professional whose humility, professionalism and commitment to service left a lasting impact on the University and the nation.

Tributes from Minister for Education, Science and Technology Prof. Adolf Mkenda; Minister of State in the Presidentโ€™s Office - Planning and Investment, Prof. Kitila Mkumbo; Tanzania High Commissioner to United Kingdom, Amb. Mbelwa Kairuki; UDSM Vice Chancellor Prof. William A. L. Anangisye; former UDSM Vice Chancellor Prof. Rwekaza Mukandala; and many others celebrated Mr. Mushi as a trusted colleague, unifying force and dependable public servant whose contributions strengthened institutional communication, stakeholder engagement and major University initiatives.

Remembered for his trademark smile, integrity and willingness to serve, Mr. Mushiโ€™s final assignment was coordinating Cluster I of UDSMโ€™s 56th Graduation Ceremony before his untimely passing. As the UDSM community mourns his loss, it also celebrates a remarkable legacy of dedication, excellence and selfless service that will continue to inspire generations to come.

Delivering the 2026 Mwalimu Nyerere Distinguished Lecture during the 17th Mwalimu Nyerere Intellectual Festival at the University of Dar es Salaam, Prof. Zachariah Mampilly challenged Africa to reclaim its intellectual independence by producing knowledge rooted in its own realities and aspirations. In his lecture, "๐‘จ๐’‡๐’“๐’Š๐’„๐’‚๐’ ๐‘ฒ๐’๐’๐’˜๐’๐’†๐’…๐’ˆ๐’† ๐‘ท๐’“๐’๐’…๐’–๐’„๐’•๐’Š๐’๐’ ๐‘จ๐’‡๐’•๐’†๐’“ ๐’•๐’‰๐’† ๐‘ฌ๐’๐’… ๐’๐’‡ ๐’•๐’‰๐’† ๐‘ณ๐’Š๐’ƒ๐’†๐’“๐’‚๐’ ๐‘พ๐’๐’“๐’๐’… ๐‘ถ๐’“๐’…๐’†๐’“," he argued that Africa must move beyond dependence on external ideas and strengthen universities as centres of critical thinking, innovation, and social transformation capable of shaping the continentโ€™s future.

Opening the festival, Prof. William A. L. Anangisye, Vice Chancellor of the University of Dar es Salaam, emphasized that Africa must actively define its development priorities and contribute meaningfully to global discourse in an increasingly multipolar world. He underscored the role of universities not only in producing graduates and research but also in fostering critical reflection, challenging assumptions, and helping society envision the future with confidence.

The festival also marked the official assumption of office by Prof. Alexander Makulilo as the new Mwalimu Nyerere Professor of Pan-African Studies, succeeding Prof. Rwekaza Mukandala. Prof. Makulilo highlighted the enduring relevance of Pan-Africanism in addressing contemporary challenges, stressing the importance of continental integration, African-led research, academic collaboration, and youth participation in shaping Africaโ€™s future amid evolving global dynamics.

Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, born in Butiama in 1922, was the founding father of Tanzania, a respected teacher, Pan-Africanist and the first President of the United Republic of Tanzania. Known for his strong belief in unity, equality and education for all, Nyerere dedicated his life to building a self-reliant nation through knowledge and leadership. His vision of education as a tool for liberation and national development continues to inspire generations across Africa.

As the first Chancellor of the University of Dar es Salaam, Mwalimu Nyerere played a vital role in shaping the universityโ€™s identity as a centre of intellectual excellence, patriotism and social transformation. He believed universities should serve society by producing leaders committed to solving national and African challenges. His legacy remains deeply rooted at UDSM through academic debates, research, leadership values and continued efforts to promote inclusive education, unity and development for the nation and the continent.

The University of Dar es Salaam has recognized development partners, alumni, institutions and supporters for their continued contribution to inclusive education and student welfare, while officially launching the UDSM Marathon 2026.

The ceremony, held at the UDSM Library Study Lounge, was officiated by the University Chancellor and former President of Tanzania, Dr. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, who emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in ensuring equal educational opportunities for all students regardless of their background or circumstances.
The marathon, scheduled for 5th December 2026, aims to mobilize resources for inclusive learning, accessibility support and student welfare programmes.

Vice Chancellor Prof. William A. L. Anangisye reaffirmed UDSMโ€™s commitment to creating a supportive and empowering academic environment for over 42,000 students, while Deputy Vice Chancellor-Planning, Finance and Administration, Prof. Bernadeta Killian highlighted ongoing investments in assistive technologies and accessible learning facilities.

Chairperson of the University Council, Ambassador Mwanaidi Sinare Maajar, also called for stronger collaboration and compassion in building learning environments that promote dignity, equality and opportunity for every student.

The University of Dar es Salaam marked a historic milestone during Cluster I of its 56th Graduation Ceremony as 876 graduates, including 94 PhD holders, were awarded degrees at Mlimani City Hall. The ceremony was officiated by former President and UDSM Chancellor, Dr. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, who urged graduates to use their knowledge, research and innovation to drive national development and solve societal challenges. Vice Chancellor Prof. William A. L. Anangisye highlighted UDSMโ€™s growing global academic competitiveness, research excellence and innovation achievements shaping Tanzaniaโ€™s future.

One of the most inspiring moments was the graduation of Dr. Paul Msoka, a visually impaired scholar who earned a PhD in Education, symbolizing resilience, determination and UDSMโ€™s commitment to inclusive education. The ceremony reflected the Universityโ€™s continued legacy as Tanzaniaโ€™s premier institution of higher learning, producing leaders, researchers and innovators committed to transforming society through knowledge and service.

Unlike the energetic cheers and colourful excitement often seen at undergraduate graduations, the University of Dar es Salaamโ€™s 56th Graduation Cluster I today 25th May 2026 carried a different atmosphere one of calm confidence, academic maturity, prestige, and global scholarly excellence.

Inside Mlimani City Hall, newly conferred PhD graduates walked proudly in elegant academic regalia as Chancellor Jakaya Kikwete awarded doctoral degrees to scholars whose journeys reflect years of resilience, research, sacrifice, and intellectual dedication.

The ceremony was graceful, inspiring, and deeply emotional a true display of scholarship, international academic culture, and the enduring pride of University of Dar es Salaam. Every step, smile, and celebration symbolized not only personal achievement, but also Tanzaniaโ€™s growing contribution to global knowledge, innovation, and academic leadership.
