Waste collection is taking shape in Mbweni, with collectors reaching households to collect separated waste and put the Zero Waste Model into practice.

During collection, waste collectors continue guiding households on how to separate waste into four designated groups, making their work easier and preventing different materials from getting mixed. They also weigh the waste to track the quantities collected, providing useful information for planning and managing the model.

The Mbweni MRF has an estimated storage and processing capacity of approximately 85 tonnes per cycle, covering organic waste processing and recyclable material storage. It is designed to serve around 3,000 households and 400 commercial establishments in Mbweni Ward, with potential to reach more than 5,000 households under full operational conditions.

From households to collection and the MRF, the system connects residents and waste collectors in keeping materials separated and properly managed.

Our Deputy Executive Director, Nicole Kapesi, visited the Mbweni MRF to learn and see firsthand how the model is being put into practice within the community.

During the visit, she was taken through the facility to understand how it is set up and how the different spaces will support the handling and management of separated waste. She also met with the waste collectors, creating an opportunity for two-way learning and exchange on how the system works at the community level.

She later joined the waste collectors as they reached some households to collect separated waste. Along the way, the collectors continued guiding residents on how to properly separate their waste, helping make the collection process easier and supporting communities to understand their role in the Zero Waste system.

In preparation for the collection activities, the waste collectors received practical training on how to record and track the amount of waste collected using data forms. This information will help them monitor collection activities and understand the volume of waste coming from the community.

Their role goes beyond collecting waste. They will continue guiding households on how to properly separate waste at the source, making collection easier while encouraging waste separation to become part of daily routines.

When waste is separated at the source, organic materials can be collected and managed appropriately instead of being mixed with other waste. Connecting informed collectors, engaged communities, and reliable data helps turn the model into everyday practice.

The exhibition in Zanzibar concluded at the Dole grounds in Magharibi A District, where the guest of honour, Second Vice President of Zanzibar, Hon. Hemed Suleiman Abdulla, officially opened the exhibition on behalf of the President of Zanzibar.

Throughout the exhibition, waste collectors from Chumbuni (UTSC) and Kijitoupele (TASIKI), who are implementing the model in Zanzibar, engaged with visitors who visited their stand, sharing knowledge on proper waste management and highlighting how waste can be viewed not only as something to be discarded but as a resource that can be recovered and put to valuable use within the community.

One of the stories shared at their booths was the journey of food scraps into compost. Organic waste processed at their Material Recovery Facilities (MRF) is transformed into compost that can return nutrients to the soil and support crop production.

Visitors and various stakeholders had the opportunity to learn more about the Zero Waste Model and see how food scraps can be transformed into compost that supports farmers and contributes to agricultural production.
