Tanzania Women Architects for Humanity (TAWAH) is a non-governmental organization based in Dar es Salaam composed of women architects and scientists committed to enhancing social justice by improving living environments and facilitating income generating opportunities for low income and marginalized groups in Tanzania, particularly women. TAWAH uses a unique participatory approach to development t

hat brings its expertise in design, engineering, science and finance into a partnership with the groups it serves in order to solve housing and sanitation problems. In doing so, TAWAH helps low income and marginalized communities enhance their social and economic capacities.

From Agricultural Waste to Sustainable Construction

What if the waste we throw away could become part of the solution to a greener future?

During our Low Carbon Materials (LCM) training, trainers and participants from different parts of Africa explored how agricultural waste such as cassava peels, sugarcane husks, and rice husks can be transformed into valuable resources for low-carbon construction helping reduce the amount of cement needed in construction materials.

In this inspiring short reflection, Engr. Dr. Kolawole, Associate Professor at the University of Lagos, shares his insights on the incredible potential of agricultural waste, including cassava ash, as a sustainable construction resource. He also reflects beautifully on his experience with TAWAH, and the powerful impact of seeing women actively participating and building their skills in the construction sector.

His message reminds us that sustainability is not only about the materials we use it is also about the people we empower to create a better future.

Mentorship is more than guidance it is a journey of growth, connection, and sisterhood.

Through the Women in Construction Mentorship Program, women are continuing to learn from one another, share experiences, build confidence, and grow together in their professional journeys.

We are grateful to all our mentors and mentees who continue to share their progress, meeting moments, and milestones with us. Every conversation, every lesson, and every word of encouragement is helping to build a stronger and more connected community of women in construction.

Today, we shine the spotlight on Mentors Subira Mchumo and Comfort Mosha, alongside their mentees Gloria Essau, Dorah Mtima, Priscilla Kiyagi, and Jematilda.

Thank you, Subira and Comfort, for giving your time, experience, and care, and for walking alongside your mentees with the support and encouragement of younger sisters. Your commitment reminds us that true mentorship is not simply about sharing knowledge  it is about opening doors, building confidence, and helping another woman believe in what she can become.

At Tanzania Women Architects for Humanity (TAWAH), we are proud to see these relationships continue to flourish beyond the programme, creating connections that can last a lifetime.

Learning, Inspiration & Breaking Barriers

During the Regional Low Carbon Materials & Eco-Construction Training at TAWAH VTC, we had the pleasure of hearing from Eng. Wendy Nambule Mukape from Zambia, Principal of the National Construction School, as she reflected on her experience throughout the training.

Beyond the technical knowledge and hands-on learning, Eng. Wendy shared her excitement about witnessing TAWAH Women Builders confidently demonstrate their construction skills challenging perceptions and showing what is possible when women are given opportunities to learn, build, and lead.

Her experience is a powerful reminder that learning is not only about the skills we gain, but also about the people who inspire us along the way.

From Zambia to Tanzania, this training brought together knowledge, experiences, and people united by a shared vision for more inclusive and sustainable construction across Africa.

Leaving a Mark That Will Keep Growing!

At TAWAH VTC, participants from Uganda and Zambia, together with trainers from Cameroon and Nigeria, were given the opportunity to leave more than just memories behind they left a living mark by planting trees.

After days of learning, building, sharing knowledge, and connecting across borders, tree planting became a beautiful way to give back to the environment and leave something that will continue to grow long after the training ended.

From Uganda, Zambia, Cameroon, and Nigeria, every participant planted a tree and left a little piece of their journey at TAWAH. 

A big thank you to UNDP, the ACP Development Minerals Programme, and the European Union for supporting a training journey that connected people, built skills, and inspired action for a greener future.
