The Irish Embassy in Tanzania hosted a recent visit of the UCDVO Holy Union Sisters health project team. Many thanks to Deputy Head of Mission Mags Gaynor for the insightful and interesting visit. We all learned so much about the work of Irish Aid in Tanzania.

The current issue of the Irish National Teachers' Organisation Intouch magazine carries an article about Churwi and the many schools and projects of the Holy Union Sisters. We are very fortunate to have received funding from the INTO Solidarity Fund since 2016.

Maji Matitu school of 5300 pupils. The Holy Union Sisters supported this school in its foundation and growth when they first set up their community here. Memkwe/COBET have their own classroom here which facilitates their integration from a small heavily supported environment to a large government school. Despite huge numbers in each year group (see the daily roll blackboard!), teachers work very hard to maintain a high quality of learning. This school also has a special class for pupils with disabilities. It has just twenty pupils and two teachers and they have their own purposely built classroom and play area.
The grounds are well maintained and so far this is the closest I have come to Mount Kilimanjaro!

Pupils learning to play the steel band in COBET. This is an accelerated 3 year primary school programme for children who were not able to access education due to family circumstances. They will join the secondary school in Majamatitu where they will be kept together in their own class. Pupils from COBET, despite starting school late, progress very well with the support of this school project. Many become prefects in secondary school and many of their class will access 3rd level education.
See can you recognise the song!

The walk to Churwi is long and difficult as you can see from the photos. During rainy season it is a dangerous journey and some of the bridge was damaged this year. This is the journey children took until Churwi school was built. Every classroom of the school has been built with the aid of donations. While the government pay the teachers, they have not built classrooms or adequate toilet facilities.
Today was a celebration of the new classroom, thanking the builder and Irish National Teachers' Organisation for the grant from their Solidarity fund. After the school performance we were treated to lunch; Tanzanian stew with meat, vegetables, cooking banana and greens washed down with a cup of chai in the principals office.

This morning we walked to Churwi with the builder of the new classroom. We were entertained by the school band and all 2300 pupils. This school began with 59 pupils and funding from Creagh NS confirmation class. This new classroom was built from a grant from the Irish National Teachers' Organisation Solidarity fund.
