This , we highlight the transformative impact of sustainable water solutions in Chihanga Ward, Dodoma. 💧

Through VSO’s intervention, access to clean and safe water is no longer a daily struggle. The installation of solar-powered water pumps at village boreholes, along with 8 water distribution points, now delivers over 80,000 litres of water daily; benefiting more than 9,000 people.

Water is now closer to households, significantly reducing the burden on women and girls. This has created time and space for women to engage in livelihood activities, while girls are able to attend school consistently and focus on their education.

Beyond meeting basic needs, this initiative has become a catalyst for economic empowerment within the community. Reliable water access has enabled the growth of irrigation farming, livestock keeping, brick production, and small businesses such as car, motorcycle, and vehicle washing services.

Clean water is not just a necessity; it is a driver of opportunity, dignity, and local economic development.

International Women’s Day 2026 |

This year’s International Women’s Day calls for accelerating progress toward gender equality and strengthening women’s leadership in shaping sustainable economies.

At VSO, we are witnessing the power of women when opportunities, skills, and collective action come together. Through our work in the blue economy in Dar es Salaam and Bagamoyo, women are not only participating — they are leading change.

✔️ Two women’s cooperatives have been formed, strengthening collective voice, bargaining power, and access to markets.
✔️ Over 100 women-led green enterprises have been established within the blue economy sector.
✔️ 43 women-led businesses have reported growth and expansion, increasing their customer base and strengthening market networks.

These achievements demonstrate that when women are supported to access skills, finance, and markets, they become powerful drivers of sustainable livelihoods and ocean-based economic opportunities.

VSO remains committed to supporting women to lead, innovate, and thrive in the blue economy, ensuring that no voice stands alone.

This week, VSO Tanzania is delivering a four-day comprehensive Capacity Building session on the Power Shift and Locally Led Development (LLD) Toolkit for ACTIVE Project Civil Society Groups across Tanzania.

The sessions aim to strengthen understanding of locally led development, power analysis, and intersectionality, while promoting the practical application of context and power mapping tools throughout the programme cycle. It has been encouraging to see CSGs critically examine how power dynamics shape participation, inclusion, and accountability within their communities.

Did you know that VSO Tanzania supports fishers to diversify their livelihoods?

Why does this matter?
Many small-scale fishers depend on a single, climate-sensitive source of income. When fish stocks decline due to overfishing, climate change, or environmental degradation, entire households are pushed into vulnerability. Livelihood diversification strengthens resilience, protects marine ecosystems, and creates more stable income opportunities for coastal communities.

What alternative livelihoods do you think can best support fishing communities while protecting our oceans? Share your thoughts below.

Happy International Volunteer Day!

Let’s

Today, we celebrate the passion, dedication, and resilience of all volunteers around the world — especially the incredible VSO volunteers who give their time, skills, and hearts to ignite lasting change in communities.

"Pass the Spark – Ignite Lasting Change"

At VSO, we believe that true transformation begins with people. Every skill shared, every young person mentored, every community empowered, and every voice uplifted becomes a spark; a spark that grows into sustainable, community-led change.

Volunteering is more than an act of service — it is a "movement of changemakers" committed to building fairer, healthier, and more resilient societies.
Through the VSO volunteering for development model, we equip communities to:

i) Build livelihoods and economic resilience
ii) Strengthen inclusive education
iii) Improve health systems and wellbeing
iv) Protect our planet and empower marginalized voices

Each act of volunteering lights a spark of hope, skills, dignity, and opportunity. When we pass this spark forward — from one volunteer to another, from one community to the next — we create change that lasts for generations.

To All Volunteers:

Thank you for your courage, dedication, and unwavering commitment to a better world.
Your spark matters.
Your service inspires.
Your impact endures.

Happy International Volunteer Day!
Let’s keep shining. Let’s .
Let’s ignite lasting change — together.

ACTIVE Project Validation Workshop – Coastal Regions

Strengthening Civil Society for Inclusive, accountable, and transparent Blue Economy & Climate Action

Over 30 representatives from Civil Society Groupings (CSGs) across Tanzania’s coastal regions came together last month for a powerful co-creation and validation workshop under the ACTIVE Project.

🤝 The session aimed to:
✨ Build a shared understanding of the project’s goals and strategic direction
✨ Validate key approaches and ensure they reflect community priorities
✨ Clarify the roles and responsibilities of each CSG in driving change
✨ Strengthen collaboration for effective community-led development

After several sessions, the group empasized these issues to be addressed by the project:
i) Limited capacities in resource mobilization, financial management and knowledge exchange

ii) Weak advocacy, policy engagement and governance within CSGs

iii) Inadequate technical knowledge for enterprise development and market linkage

iv) Gaps in digital literacy, documentation, and internal systems

v)The need for stronger climate action, natural resource management, and inclusive participation in coastal economies

This project is funded by UK FCDO.
